Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma is set to have a stand named after him at the famous Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is considering this tribute to honor his historic achievements as the captain of India.
Rohit Sharma to Have Stand Named After Him at Wankhede Stadium
Rohit Sharma led the Indian cricket team to victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Under his captaincy, India also reached the finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup and the ICC World Test Championship.
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) members have proposed naming a stand after Rohit to recognize his achievements. However, the MCA is facing a tough decision as several members have suggested naming different stands and walkways at Wankhede Stadium after other iconic personalities as well.
Proposals for Naming Stands After Iconic Mumbai Cricketers
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is considering honoring Mumbai legends like the late Ajit Wadekar, Eknath Solkar, Dilip Sardesai, Padmakar Shivalkar, and former India Women’s captain Diana Edulji, as well as Team India captain Rohit Sharma, for their contributions. Proposals to honor former presidents Sharad Pawar and Vilasrao Deshmukh have also been received. The final decision will be made by the general body members soon.
MCA President, Ajinkya Naik, confirmed: “There have been suggestions from members, and the final decision will be taken by the general body members of the Mumbai Cricket Association.”
Amid growing support, the MCA discussed naming a stand after Rohit Sharma, especially the grandstand above the president’s box at Wankhede Stadium. Currently, the East Stand is named after Sunil Gavaskar, the West Stand after Vijay Merchant, and the North Stand honors Dilip Vengsarkar and Sachin Tendulkar.
Wankhede Stadium’s Iconic Stands and Tributes to Cricket Legends
The media gallery at Wankhede Stadium is dedicated to the late Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray. In 2022, a life-size statue of Sachin Tendulkar was installed to honor his contribution to Indian cricket. However, the MCA is facing space issues with the growing number of proposals.
There are limited unnamed spots left at the stadium, making it tough to accommodate all requests. Former BCCI official Ratnakar Shetty has once again suggested naming a stand after Ajit Wadekar, who led India to a historic win in 1971. Wadekar’s family had previously requested a stand instead of a lounge for him. The MCA will make final decisions during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on April 15.
Sharad Pawar, already honored with the Indoor Academy and upcoming library named after him, may be honored again with a stadium stand. There are also proposals to name two footbridges after Dilip Sardesai and Eknath Solkar.
