Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid Set Record Partnership

Indian captain Sachin Tendulkar won the toss and decided to bat first. Sachin Tendulkar pursued Chris Cairns, but Sourav Ganguly was run out at the non-end striker when Shane O’Conner’s light touch on the ball shattered the stumps. India’s batsmen took control of the game after the early breakthrough as New Zealand’s bowlers were unable to make any further inroads. Both Dravid and Tendulkar destroyed the bowling attack. Even Chris Harris, who is often frugal, was not spared that day. Harris, who is known for his deft speed changes, couldn’t halt the run flow.

Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid hit the boundaries

This day in Taunton, 22 years ago, the renowned Indian batters Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid played around with a top-notch Sri Lankan attack during the 1999 World Cup. Two Indian batters destroyed the then-defending champions, paving the way for the quadrennial competition.

At that time, big hitting of this caliber was unheard of in cricket. In just 44.5 overs, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly combined for 318 runs, the first 300-run partnership in ODI cricket. With 7 sixes, 17 fours, and 158 balls, Ganguly scored 183 runs in his greatest ODI performance. In 120 balls, Dravid scored 145, hitting just one six out of 17 boundaries. India defeated Sri Lanka by 157 runs as they scored their then-highest World Cup total of 373.
