Winning streaks are a powerful indicator of dominance. It acts as a measurable indicator of a team’s dependability on the field, which most often converts into long-lasting legacies. In the One Day International (ODI) format of cricket, Australia has long been a strong force. Under Ricky Ponting’s captaincy, the Australian team, in particular, went on an unparalleled golden run. The cricket teams that have been able to win consecutive ODI games are listed below.
Australia — 21 victories
The longest winning streak in ODI cricket history belongs to Australia, who won 21 consecutive games in 50-over cricket between January 2003 and May 2003. The amazing run was started in Hobart with a seven-run victory over England. The third game in the VB Game between England, Sri Lanka, and Australia was this one. After this game, Australia went on a six-game winning streak during which they won every match in the series.
They defeated Pakistan, India, the Netherlands, Zimbabwe, Namibia, England, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand to extend their excellent run in the 2003 ICC World Cup. The irrepressible Australians went on to overcome India in the championship match and won it.
On their voyage to the West Indies, Australia’s streak came to an end. The Windies quickly recovered from losing the first four of the seven games in the series by winning the next three, ending Australia’s unbeaten streak. Australia’s 21-match winning streak is by far the longest in ODI history. 12 consecutive victories, which South Africa and Pakistan have twice attained, is the next-best record.
South Africa – 12 wins
Under Graeme Smith’s leadership, the Proteas had their best run in One Day International cricket from February to October 2005. They began it all by defeating England at the Centurion in February 2005 by a margin of three wickets. In the South African tour of Zimbabwe, the hosts won 3-0, and in the South African tour of the West Indies, the visitors won 5-0.
The five-match series, which the Proteas won 4-0, carried over to New Zealand’s tour to South Africa later that year. A no-result in the fourth game finally caused South Africa to lose their winning run.
Pakistan – 12 wins
Pakistan is tied for second place with 12 straight ODI victories, which took place between November 2007 and June 2008. Shoaib Malik led his team to a 31-run victory in Jaipur over their bitter rivals, India. Two key bilateral series that Pakistan hosted, extending their winning record, were a five-match series against Zimbabwe in January and February 2008 and a five-match series against Bangladesh.
Pakistan defeated Zimbabwe 5-0 and Bangladesh 5-0 at home, respectively, displaying total domination. When Pakistan visited Bangladesh later that year, they won the first game to extend their winning streak to 12 games. Nevertheless, Bangladesh defeated them in the ensuing game to end their winning streak.
South Africa – 12 wins
While AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis shared the command of the South African national team between September 2016 and February 2017, South Africa tied their own record of 12 straight victories. The beginning of it all was a big 206-run triumph against Ireland, which was followed by a 5-0 thrashing of Australia when they came to South Africa. Sri Lanka received the following treatment after playing the Proteas and went on to lose the series 5-0.
When South Africa flew to New Zealand and lost the second ODI of the series, it was their first loss in a while after a run of 12 triumphs. In the fifty-over format, the Indian men’s cricket team has twice established a winning streak of nine games. The first took place between November 2008 and February 2009, and the second between July and September 2017.
