Fast-bowler Matt Henry is set to rejoin the New Zealand T20 squad for the upcoming five-match series against Pakistan, marking his return after being sidelined due to a hamstring injury during the ICC Cricket World Cup in India.

Joining the 13-player squad for the series starting on January 12, Henry’s comeback aligns with the return of skipper Kane Williamson and opening batter Devon Conway after their respective rest periods post the Bangladesh Test tour.

However, Williamson’s ongoing management of a knee injury will see him miss the third T20I in Dunedin. Uncapped Josh Clarkson will cover for him in that match, while Mitchell Santner will step in as captain.

Head coach Gary Stead highlighted the significance of the Pakistan series in the team’s preparation for the T20 World Cup. He expressed enthusiasm about the return of key players, including Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Kane Williamson, and Devon Conway, emphasizing their collective skills and experience that will fortify the squad.

Lockie Ferguson, recovering from an Achilles injury, is slated to make his comeback, participating in three Super Smash games for Auckland Aces before joining the national squad for the final three matches against Pakistan.

In the absence of certain players due to injuries or overseas league commitments, the team welcomes the inclusion of young talent like fast-bowler Ben Sears, known for his impressive performance in the recent Bangladesh series.

However, Kyle Jamieson’s ongoing rehabilitation from a hamstring injury and the unavailability of Trent Boult and Jimmy Neesham due to overseas commitments have influenced squad selections.

The New Zealand T20I squad for the Pakistan series is scheduled to convene in Auckland on January 9.
