List of Hat Tricks in ODI Cricket: Records and Statistics

Lasith Malinga of Sri Lanka is the only bowler with three ODI hat-tricks. Five other bowlers have taken two hat-tricks in the format: Pakistan’s Wasim Akram and Saqlain Mushtaq, New Zealand’s Trent Boult, and India’s Kuldeep Yadav.

Taking three wickets in a row in cricket is known as a “hat trick.” In more than a century of cricket, just a handful of bowlers have achieved a hat trick. The Cricket World Cup Hat-Tricks enhance an already amazing accomplishment. Each hat trick scored during the ODI World Cup is exceptional. In a 1987 match against New Zealand, Chetan Sharma of India scored the first-ever hat trick. To this day, Lasith Malinga is the only bowler to have taken a hat-trick at two separate World Cups. He scored his first career hat trick against South Africa in the 2007 World Cup. Throughout four successive deliveries, he took four wickets in that game. In the 2011 World Cup, Malinga scored his second hat trick while playing against Kenya.

Check out these five bowlers who have all picked hat tricks in the past and entered their names into the record books. Take a look:

  1. Lasith Malinga

Year: 2004-2019

One of the best bowlers in cricket history is Lasith Malinga. Throughout his lengthy career, he has had numerous outstanding stretches that have impressed his audience. Lasith Malinga has the record for most ODI hat tricks. There have only been three hat tricks in international competition in one day, all of which he has accomplished. Malinga’s first World Cup hat trick came in 2007 when he faced South Africa.

Fans of cricket will remember Lasith Malinga’s bowling for a long time. Lasith Malinga nearly won the game for his team by taking four wickets in four deliveries. Against Kenya in the 2011 World Cup, he took 6 for 38, his second hat trick. With the help of Mitchell Johnson, John Hastings, and Xavier Doherty, he scored a hat trick against Australia in Colombo in 2011.

  1. Kuldeep Yadav

Year: 2017-2019

Only one other Indian cricketer, Kuldeep Yadav, has ever achieved this feat: taking two hat-tricks in a single international match. At this time, he is third on the list of the top five bowlers in hat-tricks in one-day internationals. Kuldeep Yadav’s improvement as a cricket player has been noticeable in his recent international performance.

In 2017, while playing Australia at Eden Gardens, he recorded his maiden hat trick. This game took place Down Under. He took out Matthew Wade, Ashton Agar, and Pat Cummins with three balls in a row for his maiden hat trick in an international competition. While playing against the Windies in Visakhapatnam, Kuldeep completed his second hat trick of 2019. As a result of his efforts, Shai Hope, Jason Holder and Alzarri Joseph were all eliminated from play.

  1. Trent Boult

Year: 2018-2019

One of the most talented Kiwis in recent memory, Trent Boult, has consistently taken charge and set the tempo for the team. One-day internationals are a more manageable format for the man who comes into his own in the biggest games and has already scored two hat tricks in those. In New Zealand’s 2018 Abu Dhabi victory over Pakistan, Boult claimed three wickets in an over, including those of Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, and Mohammad Hafeez. Boult scored a hat trick for the first time here, the first of his two. The fact that Boult accomplished this feat in the second one-day international at the “home of cricket,” Lord’s, against their trans-Tasman foes, Australia, says much about his skill as a bowler. Boult has a perfect 3-0 record after getting the better of Usman Khawaja, Mitchell Starc, and Jason Behrendorff.

  1. Wasim Akram

Year: 1989-1990

In the top level of One-Day Internationals, Akram has accomplished a hat trick twice (ODIs). Both of his ODI hat tricks occurred in the same place, Sharjah, in 1989 and 1990.

Wasim Akram got his second hat trick in six months in a one-day match, and Pakistan won the Sharjah tournament by beating Australia in the final by 36 runs. Wasim ended the match by consecutively bowling Merv Hughes, Carl Rackemann, and Terry Alderman. Wasim is the first cricketer in history to have won both a one-day and a five-match international series.

  1. Saqlain Mushtaq

Year:1996-1999

During his tenure on the field, the great Pakistani spinner Saqlain Mushtaq caused many problems for batters. Mushtaq won numerous games for Pakistan on his own. The off spinner has been picked for two games since he took three wickets in an ODI. Mushtaq took his first three wickets in a 1996 encounter against Zimbabwe in Peshawar by dismissing Grant Flower, John Rennie, and Andy Whittet. Mushtaq scored his second hat trick against Zimbabwe, although this time, it was during the 1999 World Cup. He eliminated Henry Olonga, Adam Huckle, and Pommie Mbangwa, becoming a member of an elite group of bowlers who have accomplished this feat in a World Cup.
