In any form of cricket, being out for a duck is a batsman’s cruellest and miserable experience. This also applies to T20 cricket and the IPL. Some players become anxious within the first few balls and commonly return to the pavilion without registering a run. That is one of the reasons why some players sigh with reassurance when they start managing to score the game’s first run.
The Indian Premier League (IPL), and even the T20 format in broad sense, is widely acknowledged to benefit batsmen. When the batsmen are out of form or the opposition cricketers are in form, it only takes one drastic bowling attack to send the batsman back to the pavilion without scoring a single run in the game.
In this article, we’ll look at the five batsmen who have scored the most ducks in an IPL season.
Rank | Ducks | Player | Teams | Matches | Innings | Period |
2 | 13 | Piyush Chawla | PBKS/KKR/CSK/MI | 165 | 82 | 2008-2021 |
2 | 13 | Harbhajan Singh | MI/CSK/KKR | 163 | 90 | 2008-2021 |
2 | 13 | Parthiv Patel | CSK/KTK/DC/SRH/RCB/MI | 139 | 137 | 2008-2019 |
2 | 13 | Ajinkya Rahane | MI/RR/RPS/DD/KKR | 158 | 148 | 2008-2022 |
2 | 13 | Ambati Rayudu | MI/CSK | 188 | 175 | 2010-2022 |
2 | 13 | Dinesh Karthik | DD/PBKS/MI/RCB/GL/KKR | 229 | 208 | 2008-2022 |
1 | 14 | Mandeep Singh | PBKS/KKR/RCB/DD | 108 | 95 | 2010-2022 |
1 | 14 | Rohit Sharma | DC/MI | 227 | 222 | 2008-2022 |
Rohit Sharma
It could be a bit surprising to see Rohit Sharma’s name on the list, nevertheless it does. Rohit made his IPL breakthrough with the Deccan Chargers in 2008 as an off-spinner and lower-order batsman. Since then, the ‘Hitman’ has flipped the script and established himself as an IPL batting legend, scoring 5879 runs at an average of 30.30. But besides this, Rohit has 14 IPL ducks to his name.
Harbhajan Singh
Harbhajan Singh will take the stage next. The ‘Turbanator’ was well-known for his pinch-hitting and off-break bowling skill sets. Bhajji has swung the bat in 90 of the 163 Indian premier league matches he has played in, scoring 833 runs at a strike rate of 137.91. He has, however, been brought back to the pavilion 13 times on a duck.
Ajinkya Rahane
Ajinkya Rahane, a seasoned cricketer known for his calm demeanour, is one such batsman upon whom the team can fall back. Rahane’s magnificent stroke play can indeed keep the scoreboard ticking. He, too, has been the victim of the bowlers 13 times.
Parthiv Patel
Parthiv Patel debuted in the Indian Premier League’s season opener in 2008, and he has since worn the jerseys of numerous IPL teams, such as the Chennai Super Kings, Deccan Chargers, Mumbai Indians, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, and others. Patel has been struck out 13 times while generally starting the inning.
Dinesh Karthik
The Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper-batsman has shown the ability and potential to be the batsman who would save team in a pinch. Karthik has played for a number of teams, such as the Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Delhi Daredevils, to name a few. He has 229 IPL appearances and 13 ducks in his career.
