Some of the best hitters in the world have displayed some astounding batting prowess during World Cups. The ICC Men’s World Cup is one of the most favourite spaces where the players tend to showcase their skills. It measures the success of the players – whether it is the batsmen, bowlers or the wicketkeepers. However, the ability to maintain a high average in such important competitions is what sets apart a champion player. The following is a list of all the top batting average statistics in order:

Average Player Runs Span
124.00 Lance Kluesner 372 1999–2003
103.00 Andrew Symonds 515 2003–2007
66.42 Ben Stokes 465 2019
65.20 Rohit Sharma 978 2015–2019
63.52 AB de Villiers 1207 2007–2015

The best batting average achieved by a batsman in a single Cricket World Cup (minimum 4 innings) was 166.5. During the first World Cup competition, New Zealand’s Glenn Turner had a fantastic average of 166.5, amassing 333 runs in 4 innings while striking out just twice. In one World Cup, two additional batters also had averages over 100. During the 1979 World Cup, Sir Vivian Richards of the West Indies averaged 108.5 runs per innings, while Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka averaged 108.2 runs per innings while also going over the century mark four times in a row. Prior to 2011, Sangakkara held the #1 spot in the average World Cup standings. The only batter in 2015 to accomplish this feat twice, and that too in back-to-back games, was him.

David Gower (1983 for England), Arjuna Ranatunga (1987 for Sri Lanka), Martin Crowe (1992 for New Zealand), Sachin Tendulkar (1996 for India), Rahul Dravid (1999 for India), Andrew Symonds (2003 for Australia), Matthew Hayden (2007 for Australia), and Shakib Al Hasan are the other batsmen who have topped the list of the best batting averages in World Cup competitions (Bangladesh).
