Highest Individual Batting Progression Records: ODI Records and Statistics

Rohit Sharma achieved the highest individual One-Day International score in history. The ‘Hitman’ also set a new ODI record for most boundaries hit in an innings.

There have been countless great batsmen throughout One-Day International (ODI) cricket history. One of the most spectacular skills in cricket has been on display since the white ball format was introduced. In reality, one-day international cricket has a remarkable past.

Some batters have excelled at scoring runs for their teams for more extended periods than others throughout the history of One-Day Internationals. Notable names who have excelled in their fields include Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Brian Lara, and Kumar Sangakkara. Even more impressively, Tendulkar has the record for most centuries in One-Day Internationals (ODIs), with 49.

Spectacular batsmen like Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Ross Taylor, Eoin Morgan, and others have done a fantastic job of carrying on the golden tradition of cricket’s finest ODI batsmen in the contemporary era. Although some have scored more runs than anyone else, the top scorers in each batting position are few and far between.

Let’s have a look at the highest individual ODI scores scored from each batting position:

Rohit Sharma 264, (India v/s Sri Lanka, Kolkata, 2014)

On November 13, 2014, at his favourite cricket ground, Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Rohit Sharma scored the highest individual score in One Day International history. The Indian vice-captain scored 264 runs in 173 balls for an incredible strike rate of 152.63.

The ‘Hitman’ also set a new ODI record for most boundaries hit in an innings (42 – 33 fours and nine sixes). The 173 balls Rohit faced were the most ever faced by a batsman in a 50-over ODI. With Rohit at the helm, India scored a massive 404/5. India triumphed with a 153-run victory after Sri Lanka was bowled out for 251 runs—just 13 more than India’s Rohit had scored. Rohit scored 198 runs more than Virat Kohli, who scored 66 runs less in the innings.

Virender Sehwag 219, (India v/s West Indies, Indore, 2011)

On December 8, 2011, Virender Sehwag joined Sachin Tendulkar as the only batsman to score a double century in one-day international cricket. With an incredible strike rate of 146.97, the aggressive right-handed opener smashed 219 out of 149 balls. His 25 fours and seven sixes were hit to all parts of Holkar Stadium, Indore.

The ‘Nawab of Najafgarh’ scored the highest individual score ever made by a captain in an ODI, and his team finished with 418 runs for five wickets after 50 overs. As far as we know, this is India’s highest team total in one-day internationals. India won the game easily by 153 runs, with a lot of credit going to Viru’s record-breaking knock, which was the highest individual score in ODI history.

Sachin Tendulkar 200*, (India v/s South Africa, Gwalior, 2010)

When the “Master Blaster,” “The God of Cricket,” Sachin Tendulkar, scored a double century in an ODI match on February 24, 2010, at Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior, he gave his adoring fans a gift that would go down in cricket history books. At a blistering strike rate of 136.05, Sachin Tendulkar hit 200 not out.

Tendulkar smashed 25 fours and 3 sixes in his 147-ball innings, destroying a formidable bowling line-up featuring exceptionally talented bowlers like Dale Steyn and Jacques Kallis. India beat South Africa by an overwhelming 153 runs thanks to Sachin’s contributions to their massive 401 for losing only 3 wickets in 50 overs.

Charles Coventry 194*, (Zimbabwe v/s Bangladesh, Bulawayo, 2009)

At the Queen Sports Club Ground in Bulawayo on August 16, 2009, Zimbabwean cricketer Charles Coventry equalled Saeed Anwar’s 1997 ODI record. Coventry batted when Zimbabwe was 5/1 in the second over. With a strike rate of 124.35, he scored 194 undefeated in 156 balls. In the penultimate over, Charles Coventry missed his 200 after hitting 16 fours and 7 sixes.

Batting at number 3, Coventry scored the most runs in an innings. He also holds the record for making the most runs in an innings on a losing side because Zimbabwe’s bowling line-up couldn’t match Coventry’s superb. They lost by 4 wickets with 13 balls left versus Bangladesh.

Saeed Anwar 194, (Pakistan v/s India, Chennai, 1997)

Former Pakistani opener Saeed Anwar is next. Saeed Anwar played an aggressive inning against India in Pakistan’s 1997 tour of India. He scored 194 in 146 balls, missing a double century by 6 runs.

Despite Chennai’s challenging weather, the left-handed starter scored 132.88. By blasting 21 fours and 5 sixes, Anwar overpowered the Indian bowling line-up. Pakistan won by 35 runs after scoring 327/5 in the first innings. Until 2010, he had the greatest ODI score.
