The fastest rookie to 50 in an ODI, India all-rounder Krunal Pandya set a new record on Tuesday. The previous record holder was John Morris of New Zealand, who reached his half-century against England in 1990 in just 35 balls. He so destroyed it.
Krunal reached his half-century in just 26 balls while hitting six fours and two sixes, becoming the fifteenth Indian batsman to do so on their ODI debut. Krunal Pandya surpassed the previous record for fastest fifty on debut by a huge nine balls, although he is still a long way off the ODI record. Here are the most frequent criticisms.
AB de Villiers and West Indies, January 2015, 16 balls
In ODI cricket, AB de Villiers set the record for the quickest 50, needing just 16 balls to do so. It happened in 2015 at Johannesburg during South Africa’s second game versus the West Indies. The fastest 50 in ODI cricket was made at the time by the South African captain, who also went on to make the fastest 100. Three players, including de Villiers, hit the century mark as South Africa scored a record-breaking 439/2. After restricting West Indies to 291/7, the Proteas won by 148 runs.
Sanath Jayasuriya and Pakistan, April 1996, 17 balls
In the 1996 Singer Cup final, Pakistan’s first-inning total of 215 runs made it a low-scoring match. In just 17 balls, the southpaw went on to reach the halfway point in ODIs in the shortest time ever. By the time he reached his half-century, his opening partner Romesh Kaluwitharana still hadn’t started his innings.
Jayasuriya went on to score 76 runs in just 28 balls, but Sri Lanka was eventually bowled out for 172. Three players each surpassed the fifty-ball mark in an ODI in 17 balls. Along with Jayasuriya, Kusal Perera and Martin Guptill of New Zealand also accomplished the feat in 2015 against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, respectively.
Liam Livingstone and Netherlands, June 2022, 17 balls
The middle-order batsman for England, Liam Livingstone, tied for the second-fastest half-century in ODI cricket on June 17 against the Netherlands with a score of 50 off just 17 balls. He scored 54 runs in 17 balls, up to 50 of them coming from simply boundaries (five 4s and five 6s). Livingstone came to bat with England batting at 4/407 and adjusted quickly. By hitting four sixes and three fours in just his first over, the 28-year-old scored 32 runs off Philippe Boissevain.
