Based on reports, during the past seasons of the tournament the group stage matches have been divided into eight rounds, with four matches played in each round. During a season, each team faced six other teams once and one other team twice. This, however led Sydney, and Melbourne to include two teams in a single season. Sydney is said to include two teams named, Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder. And the two teams of Melbourne are – Melbourne Renegades and Melbourne Stars. However, each team is said to play eight group stage matches, four at their home grounds and four away, before the top four ranked teams can make progress to the semi-finals.

Later, the format is said to witness a change in the 2017/18 Season, which is said to allow 40 group stage matches with each team playing 10 matches before the semi-finals. But the final of the tournament is said to take place at the home ground of the highest-ranked team, and the league successfully introduced a ‘bat flip’ (instead of a coin toss) to decide who would bat/bowl first. Sydney and Melbourne teams have made a strong mark for themselves in the Big Bash League (BBL) and have made several records over time. Their performance and skill are exemplary and can be easily seen in the records made over time by the players and the team as a whole.
