The four most bizarre dismissals in cricket could be the ways that are not often the cause of falling wickets. Usually, we can see the batsman getting out by being bowled, run out, and caught, but in real have you ever wondered how many dismissals there are in cricket?
There are a total of ten dismissals in cricket – Bowled, Caught, Run-out, Stumped, Mankad, hit-wicket, time-out, caught and bowled, obstructing the field, and retired hurt. There have been instances in the history of cricket that resulted in declaring the most crucial end result of a game on these subjective decisions which are rarely seen on the field.
Moments of the 4 most bizarre dismissals in cricket
Ben Stokes given out for ‘handling the ball’
Ben Stokes was given out for handling the ball – This bizarre incident happened in 2015, 2nd ODI at the Lord’s Cricket Stadium when Mitchel Starc initiated a throw towards the striker’s end. Ben Stokes was out of the crease and tried to dodge the ball but ended up blocking it by hitting the wicket.
This phenomenon is known as handling the ball in which the decision lies completely in the hands of umpires and that day Ben Stokes was declared out due to stopping it from hitting the stumps intentionally.
Angelo Mathews ‘declared out due to Time-out rule’
In the ODI World Cup of 2023 held in India, Bangladesh was playing against Sri Lanka. Both teams were on the verge of being eliminated and were in search of a desperate win to be included in the further rounds of the World Cup.
During the fall of the wicket of Sadeera Samarawickrama in the 25th over, Mathews came to bat and while taking the stance realized that the strap of his helmet was not tight. Eventually, the strap came out so he had to call for another helmet, but Shakib Al Hasan the most senior player of the Bangladesh cricket team appealed to the umpire for a bizarre dismissal Time-out for Mathews.
Now, this rule states that a batsman should take a stance and be ready to face the ball within 90 seconds of the dismissal of a wicket. Here Mathews was on the ground ready to take the stance but due to his helmet’s malfunction, he had to call out for another one. Shakib took advantage of this situation and Angelo Mathews became the first batsman to be dismissed in a World Cup in 146 years of cricket.
Kapil Dev ‘makad Peter Kirsten’ in 1992
India went on its first tour of South Africa in 1992 for an ODI series. A controversial Mankad incident occurred in the second ODI of the series, South Africa’s Peter Kirsten was attempting to run quickly between wickets.
India’s Kapil Dev warned him twice for leaving his crease early.
When Kirsten continued the offense, Kapil dismissed him using the Mankad rule, which allows a bowler to run out a non-striking batsman if they leave their crease before the ball is bowled. Kirsten was visibly upset by the decision and was seen profaning the opposition while leaving the field.
1979: Hilditch’s handling error
In a test match between Pakistan and Australia, the opening batsman of the Aussies Andrew Hilditch became the first non-striker to be given out for a bizarre dismissal of handling the ball. Hilditch picked up an erratic throw onto the pitch and handed over the ball to the Pakistani pacer Sarfaraz Nawaz.
Now here the intention was just to hand over the ball to the bowler, but Sarfaraz instead appealed for an out for handling the ball despite knowing about the intention of Hilditch. Due to the laws of cricket, Hilditch was given out for the same reason. Later after the match Pakistani all-rounder Asif Iqbal said “There was no need for us to stoop so low as to appeal against Hilditch for handling the ball as a non-striker.”
