The West Indies cricket team was badly beaten by England in the first ODI at Edgbaston on Thursday, May 29. After the match, they were fined for bowling their overs too slowly. Match referee Jeff Crowe gave the fine because the team was one over short of the required number by the end of the first innings.
West Indies Penalised for Slow Over-Rate
Shai Hope, the captain, led the team that was fined five percent of each player’s match fee for the slow over-rate.
The match referee imposed a five percent fine on each West Indies player’s match fee for bowling their overs too slowly. This was done following Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which addresses slow over-rate offences.
According to an official ICC statement, the West Indies were fined for not finishing their overs on time during the first match of the white-ball series against England.
Captain Shai Hope accepted the charge brought by on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Martin Saggers, and supported by third and fourth umpires Adrian Holdstock and Graham Lloyd.
Since Hope admitted the mistake, there was no need for a formal hearing. The fine was added to the West Indies’ poor day, as they also suffered a heavy 238-run loss to England in the first ODI.
Historic ODI Feat by England’s Top Order
England crushed West Indies in the first ODI by scoring a massive 400 runs – their sixth time scoring 400+ in an ODI, and they’ve won all six matches. It was also the first time all of England’s top seven batters scored over 30 in an ODI inning. They made 90 runs in the first powerplay and kept the pace going.
No one scored a century, but everyone contributed quickly. Jacob Bethell top-scored with 82 off 53 balls. Ben Duckett, Joe Root, and Harry Brook also hit fifties.
Skipper Harry Brook led strongly as England bowled out the West Indies in under 27 overs, winning by 238 runs.
