West Indies beat Australia in World Cup warm-up match

Batting first the West Indies scored 257/5 in 20 overs with Nicholas Pooran scoring an attacking 75 off just 25 balls helping West Indies post 257/4.

West Indies beat Australia in the T20 World Cup warm-up match played on Thursday. This was Australia’s second warm-up match before the start of the main tournament on June 1. Bowling first the Mitchell Marsh-led side got off to a good start as Agar picked up the wicket of the in-form batter Shai Hope in the fourth over of the innings as the right-hander departed after scoring 14 runs off 8 balls. Having picked up an early wicket the Australian bowler would have thought that it would be a walk in the park.

The Partnership

But the pair of Nicholas Pooran who walked in to bat at number three and Jhonsan Charles had other ideas as the duo took the bowlers to the cleaners and added 90 runs for the second wicket in just 39 balls as West Indies ended up scoring 128 runs for the lose of 2 wickets in 9.2 overs

If we talk about individual performances then Pooran was the stand-out performer as he scored 75 runs in 25 balls including five fours and eight sixes. He was well supported by Johnson Charles who ended up scoring 40 runs in 31 balls with six fours registered to his name.

The Contribution

Apart from Pooran and Charles middle order batters like captain Rovman Powell who also scored a half-century, Shimron Hetmyer and Sherfane Rutherford also played crucial knocks which helped West Indies post a mammoth total of 257 runs on the board.

The Chase

Chasing a target of 258 Australia put their best foot forward but were always behind in the game. Batters like Josh Inglis who scored a half-century, Ashton Agar, Mathew Wade, and all-rounder Nathan Ellis made valuable contributions but could not convert their innings into a big score as a result Australia fell short of the target by 35 runs.

The Performance

This was Australia’s first defeat in their second warm-up match having registered a comprehensive seven-wicket win against Namibia in the team’s first warm-up match before the start of the main tournament from June 1 in the USA and West Indies.

As far as West Indies is concerned the Rovman Powell-led side has had a good practice building on the good form the team has shown since 2023. The T20 World Cup 2024 kicks off on June 1, with host USA taking on Canada in the opening match of the tournament.
