England’s versatile fast-bowler and all-rounder, Tom Curran, has been sidelined for the next four matches in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) due to an altercation with an umpire before Sydney Sixers’ match against Hobart Hurricanes at Launceston.

The tournament disclosed that after the December 11 match, Curran faced a Level 3 offense charge under the Cricket Australia Code of Conduct. According to Cricket Australia (CA), Curran ran onto part of the pitch during a pre-match practice run-up despite being verbally instructed by the umpire not to do so.

When the umpire positioned himself near the stumps to prevent Curran from approaching the pitch, Curran gestured for the umpire to move away. Subsequently, Curran attempted a practice run-up towards the umpire, who sidestepped to avoid a potential collision.

Post-match, the Match Referee charged Curran under Article 2.17 of the Code of Conduct for attempted intimidation of an umpire, leading to a penalty of four suspension points, equaling a four-match absence in the KFC BBL.

In response, Sydney Sixers expressed disagreement and announced their intent to appeal. Rachael Haynes, Head of Sydney Sixers, stated, “Tom and the club maintain that Tom did not knowingly or intentionally intimidate a match official. On legal advice, we will exercise our right to appeal the decision. We stand behind Tom and await his return to the field.”
