T20I Records: Most runs scored in a T20I match

There hardly few T20 matches where more than 400 runs are scored. But do you know about the T20I match where the most runs were scored.

There have been four T20 matches where 500 runs were scored but only once the mark has been achieved in T20 internationals. It was during a T20I match between South Africa and West Indies where 517 runs were scored. It is highly unlikely that the record will ever be broken but with batting strike rates only going upwards it is not entirely impossible.

Most runs scored in a T20I match

West Indies had toured South Africa earlier this year. It was the second T20I at Centurion where the record was made. Coincidentally, there were only 17 extras in the match. South Africa won the toss and decided to bowl first.

The South African bowlers started strong dismissing opener Brandon King. Wayne Parnell took the wicket of King on just the third ball of the match. Kyle Mayers and Johnson Charles then shared a 135-run stand for the second wicket. Even though Mayers scored 50 runs in 26 balls during the partnership, it was Charles who stole the show with his hard-hitting. Charles during the partnership scored 82 runs in just 32 balls. Mayers was then deceived by a slower bouncer from Marco Jansen and miscued a pull straight to Reeza Hendricks stationed at deep midwicket.

In the same over, Jansen dismissed Nicholas Pooran after scoring just two runs in three balls. Skipper, Rovman Powell then shared a 40-run stand with Johnson who completed his century. Charles scored 118 runs in just 46 balls hitting 10 fours and 11 sixes. He had a strike rate of 256.52. Powell scored 28 runs in 19 balls hitting 1 four and 2 sixes. Romario Shepherd provided the finishing touch to the innings, he scored 41 runs in 18 balls hitting 1 four and 4 sixes. The visitors scored 258 runs in the first innings.

For South Africa, Jansen took three wickets while Parnell took two wickets. The most expensive bowler was Sisanda Magala conceding 67 runs in his 4 overs. The most economical bowler was Kagiso Rabada conceding just 39 runs in his 4 overs.

The South African openers, Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks made full use of the powerplay. The hosts scored 50 runs in just 2.4 overs and made 102 runs in the first powerplay. de Kock completed his fifty in just 15 balls. Hendricks completed his fifty in 22 balls. The duo shared a 152-run opening stand before de Kock was dismissed by Raymon Reifer as the wicketkeeper batter top-edged the ball to Pooran. de Kock scored 100 runs in just 44 balls hitting 9 fours and 8 sixes.

Rilee Rossuow then played a short cameo scoring 16 runs in just 4 balls. Hendricks was then dismissed after scoring 68 runs in just 28 balls hitting 11 fours and 2 sixes. A great catch from Romario Shepherd positioned at long-off then brought the dismissal of David Miller. Needing 43 runs in 26 balls, skipper, Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klassen ensured that the hosts completed a historic chase with 7 balls remaining. Markram scored 38 runs in 21 balls and Klassen scored 16 runs in just 7 balls.

For West Indies, Jason Holder, Odean Smith, Raymon Reifer and Rovman Powell took 1 wicket each. Sheldon Cottrell was the most expensive bowler conceding 29 runs in his one over while Odean conceded 36 runs in his two overs.
