Washington Sundar and Deepak Chahar have been picked to India’s One-Day International squad for the forthcoming three-match series in Zimbabwe. Rahul Tripathi, a top-order batsman, has also reached the 15-man shortlist, his first ODI call-up.
SQUAD: Shikhar Dhawan (C), Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Ishan Kishan (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Deepak Chahar.
The Zimbabwe tour concludes five days before the Asia Cup begins in the UAE, which might explain why India’s lineup lacks several of its first-choice players, including regular skipper Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja, to mention a few. As a result, Shikhar Dhawan will take over as captain once more.
Washington and Deepak both last participated in an ODI for India during the earlier-in-the-year home series against the West Indies. In February 2022, Chahar was injured during on his most recent foreign duty and has since been receiving treatment at the NCA in Bengaluru. After failing to recuperate in time, he was forced to miss the IPL 2022 for Chennai Super Kings. On the other side, Sundar missed the home series against South Africa, Ireland, and the England tours due to a bowling hand injury he sustained during the IPL 2022. However, after joining Lancashire for the County season, he returned to competitive cricket.
Tripathi, who just obtained his first call-up from India for the country’s tour of Ireland, is still an uncapped player across all forms but now has a chance to play in the 50-over format.
The first of the three ODIs, which will be contested on August 18, will take place in Harare. The Asia Cup begins on August 27, and the next two ODIs are on August 20 and 22.
