Several of the Sri Lankan bowlers have written themselves in the record books. Let us take a look at the Sri Lankan bowlers who have taken five-wicket haul on test debut.

Nishan Peiris – 6/170 vs New Zealand (2024)
Nishan Peiris is the Sri Lankan bowler to achieve the feat most recently. The right-arm off-break bowler made his debut against New Zealand at Galle International Cricket Stadium in September 2024, playing a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s historic series whitewash.
Nishan took nine wickets in his first game. He achieved bowling figures of 3/33 and 6/170 in the match. Sri Lanka won the game by an innings and 154 runs to clean-sweep the test series against the Kiwis after 15 years.

Prabath Jayasuriya – 6/118 & 6/59 vs Australia (2022)
Prabath Jayasuriya best bowling figures on debut by a Sri Lankan bowler in test cricket. On his test debut against Australia at Galle International Stadium in July 2022, Prabath took 6/118 in the first innings. In the second innings, he took 6/59 to notch up a total 12 wickets in his maiden test match. Sri Lanka won the game by an innings and 39 runs, and Prabath was named Player of the Match.

Praveen Jayawickrama – 6/92 & 5/86 vs Bangladesh (2021)
Praveen Jayawickrama is the first Sri Lankan bowler to take two fifers on test debut which came against Bangladesh in Pallekele in 2021. The left-arm spinner recorded bowling figures of 6/92 and 5/86 in the match. Sri Lanka won the game by a massive margin of 209 runs, and Jayawickrama was declared Player of the Match.

Lasith Embuldeniya – 5/66 vs South Africa (2019)
On his test debut, Lasith Embuldeniya took 5/66 in the second innings against South Africa in Durban in 2019. In what turned out to be a historic moment for Sri Lanka cricket, the Asian side recorded their highest successful chase in SENA countries, chasing down the target of 304. Sri Lanka won the match by 1 wicket.
5 . Akila Dananjaya – 5/24 vs Bangladesh (2018)
Akila Dananjaya played his maiden test against Bangladesh in Mirpur in February 2018 and completed bowling figures of 3/20 and 5/24 in two innings of the match. Sri Lanka won the match by 215 runs.

Upal Chandana – 6/179 vs Pakistan (1999)
Upal Chandana’s test debut came in the final of the Asian Test Championship 1999 against Pakistan in Dhaka. He took 6/179 in his debut innings. However, Lanka lost the match by an innings and 175 runs.

Kosala Kuruppuarachchi – 5/44 vs Pakistan (1986)
Kosala Kuruppuarachchi was the first Sri Lankan bowler to bag a five-wicket haul on test debut. The left-arm seamer played his first test game against Pakistan in Colombo in March 1986. He took 5/44 in his first test innings. He followed it up with a 2/41 in the second innings, helping Sri Lanka win the game by eight wickets.
