In a strategic move, Sydney Sixers, the Big Bash League (BBL) franchise, has successfully signed the talented Afghanistan leg-spinner, Izharulhaq Naveed. This acquisition comes after England’s Rehan Ahmed withdrew from the tournament due to his selection in both white-ball formats for the West Indies tour. Despite Naveed being an unexpected pick in the inaugural BBL draft last year, his outstanding performance, securing nine wickets in nine games at an impressive economy rate of 7.37, made him the top choice for the Sixers when seeking a replacement.
Greg Shipperd, the head coach of the Sixers, expressed his enthusiasm for Naveed’s return, highlighting the unique dimension he brings to the team’s spin department. Naveed, joining forces with seasoned spinner Steve O’Keefe, Test off-spinner Todd Murphy, and emerging all-rounder Joel Davies, enhances the team’s spinning arsenal.
Shipperd conveyed his best wishes to Rehan Ahmed while welcoming Naveed back to the club, emphasizing the fortune of having a player of Naveed’s caliber. The coach expressed confidence in Naveed’s seamless integration into the team and noted the positive trajectory of the Sixers’ spinning unit.

The upcoming BBL season promises an exciting start for the Sixers, as they gear up to face World Cup-winning star Adam Zampa in a highly anticipated clash. Despite challenges posed by the exit of some English players, including Rehan and Harry Brook, the Sixers remain optimistic. However, the delayed arrival of Zak Crawley, who recently signed with the Perth Scorchers, adds a layer of anticipation to the season.
Additionally, the Sixers’ Joel Davies, currently in India with the Australia T20I squad as a net bowler, contributes to the team’s dynamic despite not being a formal member. The evolving dynamics of the Sixers’ squad set the stage for an engaging BBL season.
Amidst these developments, the BBL witnesses further international signings, with all-rounder Liam Dawson joining Melbourne Stars for the initial three games of the captain’s campaign. Furthermore, England left-armer David Payne steps in for Adelaide Strikes, filling the void left by Rashid Khan.
