Shreyas Iyer fined INR 12 lakh for a slow-over rate offence during Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) last-ball four-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK), at Chepauk in the ongoing IPL 2025 season. It is the first over-rate offence for PBKS this season, allowing for a monetary sanction under the IPL’s code of conduct.
Over-Rate Breach Triggers Fielding Penalty
Because of the slow over-rate, PBKS were forced to put an additional fielder within the 30-yard circle before the 19th over. But that didn’t stop Yuzvendra Chahal from producing an unprecedented performance. Chahal took four wickets in an over, four in one over that included a hat-trick, his second in IPL history, to destroy CSK’s lower order.
Batting first, CSK were well placed at 177 for 5 by the end of the 18th over due to Sam Curran’s scintillating 47-ball 88. They were poised to cross the 200-run barrier but folded spectacularly, losing their last five wickets for a mere six runs to be bowled out for 190 in 19.2 overs.
Shreyas Iyer Likes PBKS When He Played Dominantly
In response, Shreyas Iyer comfortably reigned supreme with a dominant 41-ball 72, hitting five fours and four sixes in a straightforward chase. He is still one of the hottest forms leading the franchise run charts for the season, with Prabhsimran Singh also chipping in a fifty, helping PBKS get the two important points to put them in second position in the points table.
CSK Eliminated from Contention
For Chennai Super Kings, the defeat was devastating. They have just four points after ten games, and it is clear that the previous champions have been eliminated from the race for the IPL 2025 playoffs. A disappointing season.
Several Captains Penalised for Over-Rate Offences
Shreyas Iyer’s fine is merely one in a line of captain penalties this season. Other leading players who’ve been fined for over-rate offences include:
Rishabh Pant (Lucknow Super Giants)
Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans)
Axar Patel (Delhi Capitals)
Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag (Rajasthan Royals)
Rajat Patidar (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)
Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians)
PBKS to Face LSG Next in Dharamsala
PBKS will face Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 4 in Dharamsala, which will be their first home match of the season at the scenic venue.
Though Shreyas Iyer’s fine might have been in the headlines, his form and leadership with the bat are turning out to be crucial for PBKS’ journey. With playoff positions at stake, discipline as well as momentum will be important to carry forward.
