Shakib Al Hasan‘s bowling action will be investigated. During a match played for Surrey in September in Taunton, the umpires found Shakib’s actions suspicious
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has asked Shakib Al Hasan to get his bowling action investigated. The ECB has asked Shakib to do so after the umpires reported Shakib’s bowling action while playing for Surrey in the County Championship.
Shakib Al Hasan convicted for his suspicious bowling action
In September, 37-year-old Shakib Al Hasan took nine wickets in the title match against Somerset in Taunton. Shakib was playing in the County Championship for the first time since 2010-11. With eight England players on national duty, Shakib had signed a short-term contract with Surrey in the absence of two key spinners like Will Jacks and Dan Lawrence.
However, Shakib could not stop Somerset from winning by 111 runs and Surrey could not win their third championship title in a row. In that match, Shakib bowled more than 63 overs but not once was any ball declared a no ball citing throwing during his bowling. Now it has come to light that the onfield umpires found his bowling action suspicious.
He has not been banned from playing but ESPNcricinfo has learned that discussions are underway to get Shakib’s action tested at an approved venue. It is likely that this will happen in the next few weeks.
This is the first time in Shakib’s two-decade-long career that his bowling action has become the subject of any kind of investigation. During this time, Shakib has taken 712 wickets in 447 matches in his international career, including 246 wickets in 71 Tests.
Shakib’s international cricket is currently in limbo. He withdrew from South Africa’s Test squad last month citing security reasons. He was also an MP in the Awami League-led government that fell in July due to student protests.
