In a surprising turn of events at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) found themselves entangled in a significant blunder as they accidentally purchased the ‘wrong player.’ The mix-up occurred during the accelerated round, leading to the acquisition of the uncapped Indian player, Shashank Singh, at a base price of Rs 20 lakhs.
The confusion unfolded when auctioneer Mallika Sagar announced the name of the 32-year-old Shashank, who hails from Chhattisgarh and is a batting all-rounder in domestic cricket. Despite Shashank finding a team for the 2024 IPL, it was a mistaken move by PBKS, who seemingly mixed up the names during the intense auction proceedings in Dubai.

PBKS co-owner Preity Zinta raised the paddle after a brief discussion with her team members when Shashank’s name was called. The routine procedure unfolded as Mallika Sagar sealed the sale to PBKS with her hammer. However, the twist came when PBKS realized their error as the auction moved to the next set of players, with Tanay Thyagrajan being the first name up.
Zinta and co-owner Ness Wadia attempted to rectify the mistake by expressing that they had misunderstood and mistaken Shashank for another player. However, auction regulations, once the hammer confirms a purchase, prevented any reversal, leaving PBKS with an unintended acquisition.
