Mitchell Marsh and David Warner both hit centuries as Australia scored 367 runs in the first innings. After winning the toss, Pakistan made one change to their playing eleven, choosing to bowl first and substituting Usama Mir for Shadab Khan. Here is a recap of the first innings.

Australia dominate the powerplay

Pakistan wasted a review off the opening ball of the game, setting up the worst possible start to their innings. David Warner was bowled out by Shaheen Afridi with the opening delivery, but replays revealed a significant inside edge. Mitchell Marsh opened the barrage of boundaries with a six in the same over. Warner and Marsh hit a six and a four respectively against Hasan Ali in his lone over. Warner was removed at mid-on by Usama Mir in the next over. Warner was batting at number eleven when the catch was dropped. In the seventh over, Shaheen bowled a maiden. After Shaheen was replaced in the ninth over, Haris Rauf let up 24 runs in his first over. Warner struck the Pakistani speedster for a six and a four, while Marsh smacked the player for three straight fours. Warner struck Iftikhar Ahmed for a six on the opening ball of the final over of the powerplay, and Marsh finished the 15-run over with two fours. During the powerplay, Australia amassed 82 runs without losing any wickets.

Australia continue their aggressive style

In the eleventh and twelfth overs, Warner and Marsh each discovered a boundary. Warner reached his half-century in 39 balls and 100 for Australia with a four in the 13th over. Rauf was pricey, giving up 16 runs in his third over despite two sixes from the batsmen. In 40 balls, Marsh reached his second straight half-century. As the drinks break was called, Marsh smashed another six in the same over. After joining the attack, Mohammad Nawaz and Iftikhar maintained tight control, giving up just 19 runs in five overs (18–22).

In the 31st over, Warner scored his fourth consecutive century in the One-Day International against Pakistan following a few calm overs from Nawaz. Marsh completed his century on the next ball, hitting a four as well. Returning to the attack, Rauf gave up 12 runs in his opening over of the pitch. After being dropped for the second time in the 32nd over, Warner struck two fours and a six in the following three balls, making an immediate impression.

After rejoining the attack, Shaheen eventually broke the 259-run opening partnership by removing Marsh, but not before the Australian all-rounder smashed him for two sixes.

Having taken two wickets at the end of his over, he removed Glenn Maxwell with the very next ball. Steve Smith was also substituted off the pitch by Usama after not playing for too long.

Warner persisted in his assault, hitting a six to get his 150. After a terrible day at the plate, Rauf’s wicket of Warner gave him something to show for his efforts. In 124 balls, Warner scored 163 runs. In his subsequent over, Rauf removed Josh Inglis following a successful review by the Babar Azam-led team. Shaheen picked up a five-wicket haul by dismissing Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood in the last over.
