Australia solidified their top-four spot with a 309-run victory over the Netherlands in the 24th match of the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. At the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the five-time champions displayed their all-around bowling prowess before David Warner and Glenn Maxwell stole the show while batting in the first innings. Here is a summary of what happened in the second innings.

Australia controls the powerplay with quick wickets

For the first time in this World Cup, Vikramjit Singh and Max Dowd had a respectable start. With the final delivery of Mitchell Starc’s opening over, Singh struck the first boundary. On the opening ball of Josh Hazlewood’s second over, ODowd also blasted a four. Hazlewood went for 14 runs in his opening over, but Singh hit two more fours in the same over. After hitting two more fours in the third over, Singh was off to a flying start. The Netherlands needed many more runs to reach 400, but they were moving at a good clip at the conclusion of three overs with 27 runs scored.

Following an over of just one run from Hazlewood, Starc dismissed ODowd in the fifth over to draw the first blood. In the sixth over, Vikramjit gave up his wicket by a careless runout. In the final over of the powerplay, Hazlewood got the third wicket by removing Colin Ackermann.

Wickets continue to fall for the Dutch

The 11th over saw the Australian captain, Pat Cummins, take his first wicket of the game, following the powerplay. Just in his second over, Cummins struck, taking Bas de Leede as his victim. In the 14th over, Mitchell Marsh entered the attack and picked up Sybrand Engelbrecht to immediately make an impact. With only 62 runs scored, the Netherlands lost half of their team.

Once again, the Dutch collapsed following a brief 22-run partnership between Teja Nidamanuru and captain Scott Edwards. In his third over, Marsh got rid of Nidamanuru. Adam Zampa removed Logan van Beek and Roelof van der Merwe with two wickets in two balls during the next over. Zampa picked up his third wicket in his following over by dismissing Aryan Dutt.
