Aryan Dutt, van der Merwe and Bas de Leede proved to be expensive for the Dutch as the Netherlands conceded 399 runs against Australia.

David Warner scored a century as Australia scored 399 runs against the Netherlands at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. After winning the toss, Australia chose to bat first. The five-time winners made just one alteration to their starting lineup, inserting Cameron Green in place of Marus Stoinis.  Here is a summary of what happened in the first innings.

Australia control the batting powerplay

The Dutch captain, Scott Edwards, showed courage by bringing in spinners at both ends to begin the match. To their credit, Aryan Dutt and Colin Ackermann were able to control the scoring relatively tightly. David Warner launched an assault on the 20-year-old spinner in the third over, smashing him for four straight fours. After being brought on as part of the attack, quick bowler Logan van Beek immediately had an impact by taking out Mitchell Marsh. Paul van Meekeren and van Beek bowled together and gave up 36 runs in six overs. Van Beek gave up 13 runs in the final over of the powerplay after Steven Smith hit him for three straight fours. Australia ended the batting powerplay with 66 runs on the board with the loss of just one wicket.

Warner and Smith set up Australia for a huge total

After the powerplay, Vikramjit Singh was brought into the attack. He and van Meekeren bowled with control, giving up just 24 runs in six overs. In the seventeenth over, Warner struck a six to break the chains. In the next over, he followed it up with two fours and another six. His fifty was finished in forty balls. In the 20th over, Smith too reached his fifty runs in 53 balls. Both batsmen persisted in their assault, hitting a six or an unusual boundary nearly every over.

Warner was nearly removed by Bas de Leede in his second over after Roelof van der Merwe caught the ball at cover. The ball touched the ground and the 38-year-old experienced all-rounder was unable to execute the catch cleanly, thus the third umpire decided it was not out. Van der Merwe took a low catch from Smith again in the very next over, but this time, after reviewing the replays, the third umpire decided in favour of the Dutch, breaking their 132-run partnership. Smith hammered nine fours and one six to score 71 runs in 68 balls.

Australia’s boundaries dried up after Smith was removed, with Marnus Labuschagne hitting just one boundary in five overs.

Warner and the Australian number four opted to apply more pressure when Labuschagne was eventually set. In the course of five overs, Australia scored 43 runs (30–34). In 35 balls, Labuschagne reached his ninth fifty in an ODI. In the next over, he smashed two more sixes and a four off the bowling of Aryan Dutt.

Quick wickets for the Dutch

In the 37th over, Labuschagne was removed by Bas de Leede, although the Australian batsman had already fulfilled his obligation. In 47 balls, Labuschagne amassed 62 runs by hitting two sixes and seven fours. In the next over, Warner finished his century with a four off of De Leede. Warner needed 91 balls to reach his century. In the 39th over, Josh Inglis was removed by De Leede, who also claimed another wicket. After finishing his assignment, Warner was also unable to stay long since van Beek fired him. With 11 fours and three sixes in 93 balls, the southpaw opener amassed 104 runs.

After bowling a few quiet overs, De Leede let up 14 runs in his seventh over when Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green struck him for three fours. Australia gave out a runout to give up the sixth wicket. In the 43rd over, Sybrand Engelbrecht delivered a fantastic direct hit throw that resulted in Green being out.

Maxwell blasts in the death overs

At the end of 45 overs, Australia had scored 312 runs for the loss of six wickets and looked in sight for a huge total. Maxwell then smashed a four and a six in the 46th over. The Australian finisher completed his 24th ODI half-century in the 47th over with a six in 27 balls. He smashed another six in the same over as De Leede leaked 15 runs. He hit two more sixes in the 48th over and skipper Pat Cummins hit a four to score 21 runs in Logan van Beek’s 9th over. Maxwell began the penultimate over with two fours and three sixes with the third one coming off a no-ball. Maxwell completed his century with the third six and recorded the fastest century in World Cup history in just 40 balls. Maxwell was dismissed in the last over after scoring 106 runs in 44 balls hitting nine fours and eight sixes.
