
Extras, especially no-balls are considered to be the worst way to gift runs in ODIs. Often extras can make the difference in the result of a match. There are many instances of batters getting into form or getting their touch back just after playing a free hit. A free hit allows the batter to play a high-risk shot without any risks and often is the case that one shot results in the batter getting into form. With the ODI World Cup approaching this is one of the few record no team would like to make. In this article, we take a look at the teams that have given the most extras in an innings.
Most extras in an ODI innings
The record for most extras in an ODI innings is 59 runs. The record is jointly held by the West Indies and Scotland. Both of these instances came against Pakistan. West Indies gave away 59 extras in a match against Pakistan in the Benson and Hedges World Series, 1989. While Scotland gave 59 extras in a World Cup match in 1999.

Legendary batter, Vivian Richards won the toss and decided to put Pakistan into bat first. The West Indies started strong and removed both Pakistani openers, Ramiz Raja and Moin-ul-Atiq for just 20 runs. Aamer Malik and Javed Miandad shared a century stand for the third wicket. During this phase faltered with their line and lengths and lost control of the innings. Miandad scored 38 runs in 78 balls and Aamer Malik scored 75 runs in 119 balls. Pakistani skipper, Imran Khan played a crucial knock down the order scoring 67 runs in just 41 balls. The West Indies bowlers gave away 59 extras including 37 runs off wides, 4 runs off no ball, 10 runs off leg byes and 8 runs off byes and helped Pakistan reach a total of 258/7.
West Indies in reply, scored 203 runs in the second innings and lost the match by 55 runs. Imran Khan after playing a crucial knock in the first innings, took two wickets in the second innings to win the Player of the Match award.
Pakistan vs Scotland, 1999 Cricket World Cup
Scotland after winning the toss decided to bowl first. The decision of skipper, George Salmond wasn’t backed up by his bowlers. The very first ball of the innings was a wide and the rest of the over consisted of another wide and a no-ball. The Pakistani top-order batters were dismissed cheaply. The ‘Men in Green’ lost half of their side for just 92 runs. Mohammad Yousuf was the best batter for Pakistan. Yousuf, batting at number six shared a century stand with wicketkeeper, Moin Khan for the sixth wicket. Yousuf along with skipper, Wasim Akram shared an unbeaten 66-run stand taking the Pakistani total to 261 runs.
For Scotland, John Blain gave away the most extras. Blain bowled 6 wides and bo-balls each. Asim Butt and Gavin Hamilton gave away 11 extras each. Both of them bowled eight wides and three no-balls each. The 59 extras given by Scotland included 33 runs off wides, 15 runs off no-balls, 6 runs off leg byes and 5 runs off byes. Scotland were bowled out for just 167 runs with Gavin Hamilton top-scoring for them with 76 runs. Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar and Abdul Razzaq picked up three wickets each for Pakistan.
