The ODI match where the most extras were bowled was played between Pakistan and Scotland. It was just the second match the two nations were playing in the ICC World Cup in 1999. There were 96 extras combined given by both the Pakistani and Scottish bowlers. The Scottish bowlers gave away 59 extras which is the joint-most extras in an innings.

1st innings- Pakistan batting

George Salmond won the toss and sent Pakistan in to bat first. John Blain opening the bowling for Scotland gave away an extra on the very first delivery of the innings bowling a wide. He then went on to bowl another wide and a no-ball to make up the over. The Scottish bowlers then gave away a total of 59 extras with the biggest culprit being John Blain. Even though the Pakistani batters started on a poor note and lost early wickets they were helped a lot by the inaccuracy of the Scottish bowlers.

Openers, Saeed Anwar and Shahid Afridi were dismissed for single-digit scores. At three and four, Abdul Razzaq and Inzamam-ul-Haq scored 12 runs each. Saleem Malik was then dismissed for a duck as Pakistan lost five wickets with just 92 runs on the board. Mohammad Yousuf then shared a 103-run stand for the sixth wicket with Moin Khan. Moin Khan played the aggressive role scoring 47 runs in just 41 balls while Yousuf stayed till the end scoring a match-winning half-century. Yousuf then shared a 66-run stand with skipper, Wasim Akram. Akram scored 37 runs in 19 balls hitting two fours and two sixes. Yousuf scored 81 runs in 119 balls hitting 6 fours.

For Scotland, John Blain gave away 49 runs in his 7 overs including 12 extras as wides and no-balls. Asim Butt conceded 55 runs in his nine overs taking one wicket and bowling eight wides and three no-balls. Gavin Hamilton was the pick of the bowlers conceding just 36 runs in 10 overs while picking up two wickets. He bowled eight wides and three no-balls. James Brinkley also bowled miserly conceding just 29 runs in his 10 overs while taking one wicket. He bowled six wides. Nick Dyer was the only bowler to not bowl a single wide or no-ball. Dyer took one wicket while conceding 48 runs in nine overs. Ian Stranger bowled five overs conceding 33 runs including one wide and three no-balls.

2nd innings- Scotland batting

The Pakistani bowlers as expected started well. They removed the half of the Scottish side with just 19 runs on the board. The top five batters were dismissed for single-digit scores including two ducks from openers, Bruce Patterson and Ian Phillip. Even the great Pakistani fast bowling quartet including Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Azhar Mahmood and Abdul Razzaq. Razzaq even bowled five no-balls.

The Scottish batters were bowled out for just 167 runs even when Pakistani bowlers helped them by giving away 37 extras. Only three of their batters registered double-digit scores. Gavin Hamilton scored 76 runs in 111 balls and played a great lone knock as he received very little to no support from his partners. Akram, Akhtar and Razzaq took three wickets each and the remaining wicket was picked up by Saqlain Mushtaq. Akhtar was the pick of the bowlers he picked up three wickets and also bowled very economically conceding just 11 runs in 6 overs.

Conclusion

In the world of cricket, bowling extras is often seen as a cardinal sin for bowlers, and the ODI match between Pakistan and Scotland in the 1999 ICC World Cup serves as a stark reminder of this fact. A staggering total of 96 extras were conceded by both teams, with the Scottish bowlers contributing a significant share of 59 extras, making it a record for the highest extras in an ODI match. Despite early setbacks in their batting innings, Pakistan capitalized on the inaccuracies of the Scottish bowlers, thanks to crucial partnerships and a match-winning performance by Mohammad Yousuf. In the end, Pakistan emerged victorious, highlighting the critical role that disciplined bowling plays in the game of cricket.
