In the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup, Mohammed Shami initially sat out the first four games. However, in his first match, he made an instant impact, claiming an impressive 5-54. This pivotal performance contributed to India’s four-wicket victory over New Zealand in a thrilling top-of-the-table clash.
After the match, Shami, the first Indian bowler to secure two five-wicket hauls in Men’s ODI World Cups, emphasized that there should be no sense of guilt when not in the playing eleven while the team excels.
Shami said, “Every wicket is crucial when you play for your country. I cherish all my wickets equally.”
While on the bench, he closely observed the game, ready to contribute when given the opportunity. He acknowledged the challenge of being on the sidelines but stressed the importance of supporting the team’s success.

Shami, a significant part of the Indian team since his 2013 debut, temporarily faced exclusion due to the presence of Hardik Pandya, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj in the starting lineup.
However, an injury to Hardik Pandya led to Shami’s inclusion, strengthening India’s fast-bowling options. Shami’s philosophy revolves around maintaining a positive outlook and being prepared to seize opportunities when they arise.
As India leads the table, Shami emphasized the importance of recovery and staying engaged during the break between matches. The team remains active with practice and games, ensuring that there is never truly a break in the world of cricket.
