According to sources, Star India bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. Due to a back injury, the fast bowler has been out since September of last year. According to reports, Bumrah may need back surgery to fully heal from his injury. The IPL 2023 season begins on March 31, and Bumrah’s injury has thrown a wrench in the plans of the Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians.
If missing the IPL wasn’t terrible enough, Bumrah might also miss the World Test Championship final in June, where India is most likely to qualify.
It’s been a difficult wait for Bumrah, who has tried to return several times since sustaining a back ailment in August that forced him to miss the Asia Cup. The injury did not appear to be serious at first, as he was nominated to India’s T20 World Cup squad in September and even played the final two T20Is against Australia on September 23 and 25.
Bumrah did not play the first T20I against South Africa three days later, and it was later disclosed that he had scans, which found a stress-related damage in his back. He was transported to NCA, where tests verified the severity of his condition. It kept him out of the T20 World Cup, when India reached the semifinals.
Bumrah restarted his rehabilitation in November and began bowling in mid-December. His improvement appeared to be promising, since he was added to the January white-ball series more than a week after the original squad was picked up.
Bumrah had done the match simulation workouts in the NCA, but the pain returned as he increased his exertion during conditioning drills in January. Scans revealed the emergence of a new niggle, which forced him to withdraw from the Sri Lanka series and the Border-Gavaskar Cup against Australia.
Indian team management and skipper Rohit Sharma want Bumrah to return to the team only when he is fully healthy, with Rohit cautioning against hurrying the pacer back into the team.
