Renowned former fast-bowler Jason Gillespie has raised doubts over the $3.67 million IPL contract secured by Australian skipper Pat Cummins. Gillespie, with over 150 appearances for Australia and coaching experience in the Big Bash League, questions the colossal deal, labeling it as “massive overs.”

The bidding war for Cummins ensued among the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Mumbai Indians, ultimately securing the player after leading Australia to a recent World Cup victory. Gillespie, while acknowledging Cummins’ prowess as a quality bowler and leader, expressed skepticism about his T20 performance, emphasizing that Test cricket is Cummins’ forte.

The 30-year-old Cummins briefly held the record for IPL’s most expensive buy until his compatriot Mitchell Starc was bagged by the Kolkata Knight Riders for a staggering $4.43 million. Gillespie, however, viewed Starc’s deal differently, citing the significance teams place on left-arm fast and swing bowling at pace, hailing it as a significant purchase.

The auction witnessed fervent interest in Australian bowlers, including Spencer Johnson from Brisbane Heat, who was snapped up by the Gujarat Titans for INR 10 crore after a bidding frenzy with the Delhi Capitals. Moreover, the Capitals secured seamer Jhye Richardson’s services for INR 5 crore, further adding to the Australian presence in the IPL auction.
