Ind vs Aus: Senior fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who has been out of cricket for over a year due to injury, is now doubtful for India’s upcoming tour of Australia. The Indian team’s hopes of securing a hat-trick of Test series wins in Australia have been hit hard after Shami suffered a fresh knee injury during his rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, according to reports.

Mohammed Shami has not played any competitive cricket since the World Cup 2023, where he was the highest wicket-taker despite battling an ankle injury that progressively worsened. His injury required surgery in London earlier this year, and since then, he has missed all international and IPL matches in 2024.

He was expected to return to domestic cricket soon, with hopes of participating in the final tests against New Zealand before heading to Australia for the five-match Test series.

Recent reports suggest that Shami developed “swollen knees” while rehabbing at the NCA, which could take weeks to heal.

“Mohammed Shami had resumed bowling and was on track to return to competitive cricket soon. But his knee injury flared up recently. The BCCI medical team is monitoring the situation, but it may take some time for recovery,” a BCCI source informed The Times of India.

The source further added, “It’s a setback for the National Cricket Academy medical team. They’ve been managing his workload efficiently for over a year. They are now focused on getting him fit and back on the field as soon as possible.”

Mohammed Shami’s injury is a significant blow to the Indian team, and it raises questions about whether the selectors will opt to rest Jasprit Bumrah during the New Zealand Test series, either partially or completely.
