Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul made unmatchable innings on the second day of the match. After their innings, the pressure mounted for the host side, Australia. Team India has managed a huge lead against the guest side, Australia.
IND vs AUS: Rahul and Jaiswal’s commendable partnership on Day 2
On the 2nd day of IND vs AUS, back of Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul’s muted half-century innings and an unbroken partnership of 172 runs for the first wicket, India started the second innings with a bang on Saturday, the second day of the first Test, to gain a total lead of 218 runs. Earlier, acting captain Jasprit Bumrah took the feat of taking five wickets in an innings for the 11th time and bundled out Australia for 104 runs.
The Indian team, which scored 150 runs in the first innings of IND vs AUS day 1, got a lead of 46 runs. While Jaiswal played patiently after learning from the mistakes of the first innings, Rahul again demonstrated his technical skills. Both batted in pure Test cricket style, respecting the good balls and admonishing the loose balls.
Jaiswal was there on 90 runs in 193 balls with the help of seven fours and two sixes at the end of the second day’s play. Rahul, who could not get any justice after being a victim of the controversial decision of the third umpire in the first innings, has shown his class once again by scoring 62 runs in 153 balls, which includes four fours.
By the second innings, the grass on the pitch had all dried up and cracks also began to appear, because of which the bowlers were not getting much help and it began to get easy for the batsmen to play strokes. Australian captain Pat Cummins tried seven bowlers but could not break Rahul and Jaiswal’s concentration.
Jaiswal took his half-century after tea off 123 balls and that is his slowest half-century in 15 Tests. This proves that as a batsman he is not only fearless but adept at playing according to the situation. Anything above 300 on this pitch will not be an easy job and if cracks increase on the pitch, Washington Sundar can prove effective.
The attitude of the Indian batsmen came out in the way Rahul, who was controversially dismissed in the first innings, played a brilliant shot on Cummins on the on drive and Jaiswal hit a four on the covers to a dangerous bowler like Mitchell Starc with great maturity.
Jaiswal troubled the Australian bowlers a lot by playing defensively at the beginning of the innings. Playing without any fear of Starc, he hit a four over midwicket. Earlier, Bumrah achieved the feat of taking five wickets in an innings for the 11th time while Harshit Rana, who was making his Test debut, bowled a brilliant first spell, with the help of which India bowled out Australia for 104 runs in the first innings.
The last pair for Australia, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood made India wait a long time for the last wicket. Australia lost nine wickets for 79 runs after which Starc (26 off 113 balls) and Hazelwood (7 not out off 31 balls) shared a 25-run partnership that lasted 18 overs. Because of this, the Indian team was left with a lead of just 46 runs.
India got a good start when Bumrah got Alex Carey caught by Rishabh Pant behind the wicket in the second over itself. Bumrah took five wickets for 30 runs in 18 overs. On the second day, Harshit started the bowling who took three wickets for 48 runs in 15.2 overs. He bowled many short balls and Nathan Lyon caught one of them in the gully to KL Rahul.
That day, his KKR had begun to reply to India’s first innings score of 150 runs and were lagging behind by 71 runs. However, the short balls strategy did not work well against his KKR teammate Starc. Starc played exceptional defensive cricket but also played some air shots. Harshit got Starc caught by Pant in his second spell.
