The Women’s Emerging Asia Cup 2025, which was due to be held in Sri Lanka starting June 6, has been postponed due to bad weather and a heightened risk of health dangers related to chikungunya, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Mohsin Naqvi said on Monday.
ACC Prioritizes Player Safety Amid Chikungunya Outbreak and Monsoon Warnings
Naqvi posted through X (formerly Twitter) that the move was taken after a formal request from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) president Shammi Silva.
The Sri Lankan Meteorological Department had already put out notices regarding strong winds and heavy rain due to a strengthening southwest monsoon, as well as health notices due to the spread of the chikungunya virus.
The ACC is keen to provide opportunities to young female cricketers to hone their craft and play at the international level. We will ensure to reschedule the event at the earliest opportunity,” Naqvi reiterated.
Plans for Rescheduling Women’s Emerging Asia Cup 2025
While no new dates were confirmed, the ACC stated that new tournament dates will soon be released. The tournament is important in broadening and developing women’s cricket in Asia, and to highlight the overall goals of the Asia Cup 2025 schedule.
Looking Back at the First Edition
The first Women’s Emerging Asia Cup was held in Hong Kong in 2023. In the final, India A defeated Bangladesh A by 31 runs, and Shreyanka Patil was awarded Player of the Series. Eight teams in a tournament comprised 15 matches, including the knockouts.
India’s Position on Asia Cup Participation
According to reports by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, India had not made any official communication to the ACC regarding India’s participation in the Emerging Asia Cup for Women, nor the Asia Cup 2025 in general. India is hosting the six-nation Men’s Asia Cup in September 2025.
The postponement of the Women’s Emerging Asia Cup 2025 highlights the ACC’s commitment to player welfare concerns and the tournament’s integrity. Fans will be eagerly awaiting the next instalment of the revised schedule while already looking ahead to the Men’s Asia Cup 2025 that is to be held later this year in India.
