Australia’s star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has officially retired from ODI cricket. He has taken this decision to focus on his T20 career completely. Maxwell played 149 ODI matches from 2012 to 2025, in which he scored 3990 runs and also took 77 wickets. He was also a part of Australia’s 2015 and 2023 World Cup winning teams.
Maxwell’s attacking style has always been in discussion
Maxwell batted with an average of 33.81 and 126.70 strike rate in ODI, which shows his aggressive approach in the format. His knock of 201 not out against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup is considered as one of the most memorable innings in the history ODI. Apart from this he also has 3 more centuries and 23 half centuries to his name. He was also quite effective with the ball – he took 4 wickets in 4 overs and also has 91 catches to his name, which shows his fielding brilliance.
This decision is in preparation for the T20 World Cup
Cricket Australia has stated that Maxwell made this decision keeping the 2026 T20 World Cup, to be held in India and Sri Lanka, in mind. According to the board, Maxwell will now fully focus on the Big Bash League and other T20 commitments.
Maxwell openly discussed his career and decisions

Talking about his retirement, Maxwell said, “I remember when I was first selected for Australia, I couldn’t believe it was really happening. I was very proud even after getting just a few matches.”
He also recalled the ups and downs of his journey – getting dropped, making comebacks, winning World Cups and being part of some of Australia’s iconic teams, all of which were priceless for him.
Decision and clarity after injury

Glenn Maxwell decided to retire from ODIs after his leg injury in IPL. He said, “I started feeling that the way my body was responding, I was letting the team down. I spoke to George Bailey and told him that I may not be a part of the 2027 World Cup.”
He also said that if he felt he was still playing at that level, he would never leave his seat. But now that the team is moving in a new direction, he feels this is the perfect time to give a chance to a new player.
George Bailey paid tribute to Glenn Maxwell
Glenn Maxwell’s ex-captain and now chief selector George Bailey paid tribute to his career. Bailey said, “Glenn has been one of the most dynamic players in ODI cricket. His role was crucial in winning two World Cups. His talent, his energy and his underrated contribution in bowling all make him special. The most special thing was his passion to play for Australia.”
Bailey also said that Maxwell will still be very valuable for Australia in the T20 format and his role will be key for the upcoming World Cup.
