ENG vs WI: England’s star bowler Gus Atkinson is enjoying his fine beginning in the longest format of the game. After making a blockbuster debut against West Indies, the young talent once again stole all the attention with his stunning performance against West Indies at Edgbaston in the ongoing third Test match.
Gus Atkinson Is Unstoppable
For the unversed, Gus Atkinson made a record-breaking debut in the Test format at the iconic Lord’s Stadium. He etched his name in the history books with golden ink as he became the eighth England bowler to pick a ten-wicket haul on Test debut. He also became the third bowler to pick a ten-wicket haul on debut at Lord’s after Alec Bedser and Bob Massie.
He became the ninth English bowler overall to pick a fifer on Test debut at Lord’s Stadium. The 26-year-old picked up 7/45 in 12 overs in the first innings to bundle out West Indies for 121. He had a great chance to become the first-ever England bowler to take an 8-wicket haul on debut, however, James Anderson ended up picking the last wicket of the West Indies first innings and denied the youngster the historic feat.
Eventually, Atkinson registered the third-best figures by an England bowler on debut (7/45) after John Ferris (7/37) and Dominic Cork (4/43). After completing his 10-fer on Day 3, he further dismantled the stumps of Shamar Joseph and dismissed Jayden Seales after getting him caught at deep square leg to bundle out Windies for 136 in the second innings.
Atkinson has continued with his brilliance with the ball as he claimed a superb four-wicket haul (4/64) on Day 1 of the 3rd Test match. All thanks to his outstanding efforts for England, the team was able to bowl West Indies out for 282 runs. Atkinson claimed two scalps in the morning session before picking 2 more in the 3rd session. In the second Test, he picked up 4 wickets.
Gus Atkinson Destroys West Indies With Four-Fer In 3rd Test Match
Playing just his third match for England in the Test format, Gus now has 20 wickets under his name at 16.45. He registered his four-wicket haul, having already taken two five-wicket hauls at the Lord’s Stadium with the best figures of 7/45.
According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, Gus Atkinson has bowled 79.5 overs in the ongoing series and has bowled 13 maidens, while conceding 329 runs at an economy of 4.12.
West Indies openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Mikyle Louis gave a solid start to their side by adding 76 runs. Gus Atkinson broke their partnership and gave a much-needed breakthrough to his side. Atkinson dismissed Mikyle Louis with a seam-up length delivery shaping away in the channel outside off. Louis, who worked hard until then, fell prey to temptations.
He later dismissed Holder at a crucial juncture. Gudakesh Motie was Atkinson’s final wicket.
Atkinson Dismissed Holder With A Stunner
During his stunning spell, Atkinson bowled a stunning delivery to dismiss Jason Holder during the 69th over of the game. The former West Indies captain had no answer to the sensational delivery from the right-arm pacer. After playing out the first four deliveries of the over, Jason Holder lost his wicket in the 5th ball of the over.
Atkinson bowled a full and angled delivery on the stump. Holder shuffled across a bit and wanted to smash the ball on the side. However, the ball moved away at the last minute, leaving Jason Holder with no chance of stopping the ball from crashing into the stumps. The ball went on to hit the off-stump. Holder looked disappointed with himself as he walked back to the pavilion.
