The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made a significant addition to the Indian squad for the upcoming second Test against South Africa, scheduled to kick off on January 3 at Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town. Fast-bowler Avesh Khan steps in as a replacement for the sidelined senior pacer, Mohammed Shami, aiming to strengthen India’s pace attack in the crucial Test.
Currently featuring for India ‘A’ in the four-day match against South Africa ‘A’ at Willowmoore Park in Benoni, Avesh Khan showcased his prowess by claiming an impressive 5/54 in 23.3 overs, including five maidens, at an economy rate of 2.3. With 149 wickets in 38 first-class matches at an average of 22.65 and seven five-wicket hauls, Avesh brings a formidable record to the Indian team.
Having also represented India in white-ball cricket with 19 T20Is and eight ODIs under his belt, Avesh Khan’s inclusion adds depth and experience to the bowling lineup.
In other developments, India has been fined 10% of their match fee and docked two ICC World Test Championship points for a slow over-rate during the first Test in Centurion. Captain Rohit Sharma accepted the proposed sanction for the offense, where India fell two overs short of the target.
As the series stands at 1-0 in favor of South Africa, India’s revised squad for the second Test includes Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Prasidh Krishna, KS Bharat (wk), Abhimanyu Easwaran, and the newly enlisted Avesh Khan.
