The Indian Premier League was founded in 2007 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and is based on the Twenty20 version of the game. Franchises for eight cities were auctioned out in Mumbai on February 20, 2008. Mohit Burman of the Dabur Group (46%), Ness Wadia of the Wadia Group (23%), Preity Zinta of the Dey & Dey Group (23%), and Saptarshi Dey of the Dey & Dey Group (23%) purchased the Punjab team. (This is a modest stake). The group paid $76 million for the franchise.

Following the issue involving the BCCI and Lalit Modi in 2010, the Indian Premier League declared on October 10, 2010, that Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals’ franchise contracts had been cancelled. The teams stated their intention to sue to remain in the Indian Premier League. Initially, the team attempted to negotiate a solution with the league, but when that failed, they decided to file a case in Mumbai High Court accusing the IPL of getting rid of the two teams in order for the contract to be awarded to a more lucrative bidder when the bidding process for the 2012 IPL season began.

The High Court was involved in the reinstatement of Kings XI Punjab.

Name change

On February 17, 2021, before of the 2021 Indian Premier League, Kings XI Punjab was renamed Punjab Kings.

According to Ness Wadia, the purpose for changing the franchise name was to “rethink everything” and rebrand after 13 seasons of IPL. He expressed his anger over the team for “not being able to win a title” and expected them to “start over” after a name change. He went on to add that the name change had been planned for two years and that COVID-19 had just pushed it back.
