Rao made his first-class debut at 16 after being born in Visakhapatnam. His good technical skills won over the coaches and teammates and earned him a spot in the starting line-up. As his career progressed, his batting average in games with a maximum of 50 overs rose. The first ODI he played was against Sri Lanka in 2005. In the following year, he played against Pakistan on tour in the United Arab Emirates, but he was not selected for national duty.
He played for the Deccan Chargers from 2008 to 2011, and he joined the Delhi Daredevils in 2011. Sunrisers Hyderabad acquired him in the 2014 auctions after DD released him at the end of the 2013 season.
