The BCCI seems to be considering putting new rules in place fairly soon to help stop the rise of the girlfriend culture among Indian Cricketers. The Board is planning to implement more stringent rules for this reason, to try and keep their players from becoming distracted.
During the 2026 IPL, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh, and Yashasvi Jaiswal were all seen out with their girlfriends and due to this we also have seen a number of lower name players also out with their girlfriends.
The main issue for the Board is the number of times their girlfriends have been at the stadiums, on team busses, or staying with them at hotels.
Rules Regarding ‘Girlfriend Culture’ to Be Tightened
The BCCI is now gearing up to tighten the rules concerning ‘girlfriend culture.’ According to a report by the *Hindustan Times*, a senior Board official stated that discussions are underway regarding the formulation of new regulations concerning issues involving players’ girlfriends, and this matter will be discussed in detail during the next meeting.
The official also clarified that the Board has no objection to players staying at hotels with their families or wives; however, in the case of girlfriends, the Board intends to adopt a more cautious and serious stance.
Why Is the BCCI Keen to Introduce New Rules?
The BCCI is worried, in part because some of the player’s girlfriends who are taking part in the IPL, and have been connected in the past to promoting betting-related sites. And also recent reports have come out that there are situations where female companions or partners have brought cases against players.
Because of these developments, BCCI intends on adopting a more aggressive strategy towards enforcement of ‘girlfriend culture’ based off these newly established rules through implementation of stricter, clearly defined protocols.
One representative for the BCCI stated that it was previously prohibited by the policies of the league to have players’ girlfriends visit players when they were residing in hotels owned by respective franchises during IPL games; this has now become commonplace. This caused the BCCI to take immediate action and begin formulating new required protocols.
A senior BCCI official recently released a report in which he stated that they consulted with an officer from the IPL’s Anti-Corruption Unit to see if there was any requirement for players’ girlfriends to be able to stay with them at the hotel. The answer shocked the BCCI official.
According to the Anti-Corruption Unit the players’ wives are able to stay together, but their reported girlfriends can also stay together. This led the BCCI official to ask what the source of the rule was and how the term “reported girlfriend” came about. The Anti-Corruption Unit official simply replied that this is merely how they have been operating all along.
New Rule Set to Impact Players
It is evident that, following the revelation of this information, the BCCI is likely to soon implement stricter regulations regarding the accommodation of players’ girlfriends. If this issue goes unaddressed, the board believes it could lead to a large-scale controversy in the future.
Due to the serious nature of the situation, this new policy could be implemented as soon as the next season of IPL. As a result, if this is implemented, any players that have been seen with their girlfriends this season (e.g., Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Arshdeep Singh and Yashasvi Jaiswal) will not likely receive this same privilege during next seasons’ IPL.
