Keeping a Promise to Kohli

Walt Disney said, “If you dream it, you can achieve it.” Indian-origin player Aryan Sharma also made a manifesto seven years ago and has achieved it through his hard work.

In 2018, when the Indian team toured Australia to play the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, like every Indian fan, Aryan Sharma went to the stadium to watch the Indian players.

Aryan loved cricket and Virat Kohli was his favorite player, for which he made a placard. However, the most striking feature of that placard was that it not only praised Kohli but also contained Aryan’s manifesto. He wrote on the placard, “Virat, you are my inspiration and in 2025, you want to see me playing for Australia.”

A chance in the Australian team for the Under-19 World Cup

No one could have imagined that day that this would one day come true. Aryan Sharma has been selected for the Under-19 World Cup, to be jointly hosted by Zimbabwe and Namibia in 2026.

He has fulfilled the promise he made to Virat Kohli to some extent, as he has reached the Under-19 team, and a good performance from here could earn him a chance to debut for Australia.

Aryan Sharma’s father, Raman Sharma, hails from the Hoshiarpur district of Punjab. He first visited Australia in 2005 and got married two years later. They have three children: a son named Aryan and two younger girls. Aryan started playing cricket at the age of six when his father gifted him a cricket bat. Melbourne has included him in the Big Bash League.

Aryan was very talented, and as a result, he always played cricket with players older than him. He was playing in the Under-11 team when he was eight, and by the age of ten, he was in the Under-14 team.

Raman Sharma’s entire family was unable to visit India for long periods. However, Aryan’s childhood coach, Bagheshwar Bisht, who played Ranji Trophy for Haryana, took Aryan and several other boys on a tour of India, after which his game saw marked improvement.

Aryan then earned a chance to play for the Australian Under-19 team. He made his debut when the Indian Under-19 team toured Australia. Although he didn’t perform well in his matches there, the Melbourne team still signed him as a local player for this season’s Big Bash League. He was given a chance in place of Scott Boland.

Scott Boland was playing the Ashes for Australia, so he didn’t play in the BBL this year. However, he didn’t get a chance to play a single match. He will now be seen playing for Australia in the Under-19 World Cup.

Aryan is known for his aggressive play and balanced shot selection. This left-arm spin bowler has shown good variations so far. While he hasn’t taken wickets, he knows how to bowl with control.

If he’s not taking wickets, Aryan can keep the run rate in check to provide wickets at the other end. He can also hit some big shots in the lower order. His fitness level and consistent run-scoring ability make him a reliable option for Australian cricket in the future.
