Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend and ex-India skipper MS Dhoni has again kept fans guessing regarding his IPL future. Addressing after CSK’s last match of the IPL 2025 season, a comprehensive 83-run victory over Gujarat Titans (GT), Dhoni said that he will have four to five months in which he will decide whether he will come back for IPL 2026 or not.
Dhoni’s Message to Fans: Not Retiring Now, But No Commitment Either

During the post-match presentation, MS Dhoni was asked about his plans for retirement. He made it very clear that he’s not about to make any short-term declaration about the same.
“I’m not saying I’m done, I’m not saying I’m coming back,” he told the presentation. “As I said, I have the luxury of time. When you have the luxury, then why not take your time to think and decide?”
Factors That Will Make MS Dhoni Decide
Dhoni stated that his continued involvement in the IPL will depend on more than performance alone. Rather, he will consider his fitness, his appetite to play, his potential to play a useful role in the team, and whether the team requires him anymore.
“It’s professional cricket, you have to be at your best. If cricketers begin retiring based on performance, some of them will retire at 22,” he said.
Home, Bikes, and Reflection: Dhoni’s Plan for the Off-Season

After the IPL season, MS Dhoni is heading home to Ranchi, where he’ll relax and contemplate.
“I will go to Ranchi, haven’t gone home in a long time, and enjoy a few bike rides – will take a couple of months, and I will decide,” he said and made it clear it is important to disconnect, and recharge.
A Legacy That Still Lingers
Regardless of MS Dhoni makes a return in IPL 2026 or not, his influence on CSK and the IPL as a whole cannot be disputed. Dhoni has led CSK to multiple titles and established a legacy of calm and composed leadership, so any update on his situation will continue to be a talking point until a decision has been made.
The Wait Continues for MS Dhoni’s Fans
For now, fans will have to be patient. MS Dhoni has earned the right to take his time, and as always, his decision whenever it comes will be made with thoughtful consideration for both himself and his team.
