Don’t Retire Yet, Kohli! Fans Hope For 10,000 Test Runs

Reports suggest Virat Kohli might retire from Test cricket after the England series, following Rohit Sharma’s announcement.

There’s big news for Indian cricket fans. Reports say that Virat Kohli might retire from Test cricket soon. This update comes just days after Rohit Sharma announced his Test retirement. If this happens, it will be a huge change for the Indian team.

The five-match Test series against England will begin on June 20, and this could be Kohli’s final red-ball appearance. As India gets ready for a new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle (2025–27), one of its biggest stars might be walking away.

Virat Kohli has been one of the top Test players for India. He is India’s third-highest run-scorer in Tests, with:

  • 9,230 runs in 123 matches
  • 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries
  • Average of 46.85

Only Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar have more runs than Kohli in Tests. Many fans were hoping to see him reach 10,000 runs, but now that seems unlikely.

Kohli’s recent form has not been great. During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25 in Australia, he scored only 190 runs in 9 innings, averaging just 23.75. Though he hit a century in the first Test at Perth, he got out cheaply in most other innings, mostly caught behind or in the slips.

He also played poorly at home against Bangladesh and New Zealand, scoring 192 runs in 10 innings, without a single fifty. While India beat Bangladesh 2-0, they lost 0-3 to New Zealand.
