Kolkata Knight Riders’ hopes of making it to the IPL 2025 playoffs took a big hit after their 39-run loss to Gujarat Titans on Monday in Kolkata. This was KKR’s fifth defeat in 8 games, and they now sit at 7th place on the points table with 6 points.
KKR’s Playoff Chances Take a Hit After Fifth Defeat
To secure a playoff spot, KKR must win all of their remaining 6 matches. If they win 5 out of 6, they can still qualify, but it will depend on their net run rate and how other teams perform. If they manage to win only 4 more games, their chances will be nearly over, though there will still be a very slim mathematical possibility.
Gill, Sudharsan, and Buttler Power GT to 198 on Slow Pitch
Prasidh Krishna and Rashid Khan took two wickets each in a tight bowling display, helping Gujarat Titans beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 39 runs at Eden Gardens on Monday.
Shubman Gill (90), Sai Sudharsan (52), and Jos Buttler (41*) powered GT to 198/3 on a slow pitch. In reply, KKR struggled and finished at 159/8, as GT stayed on top of the points table.
KKR’s top-order change backfired as Mohammed Siraj dismissed Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the first over. Ajinkya Rahane played some stylish shots for quick boundaries, while Sunil Narine hit a few before falling to Rashid Khan. KKR reached 45/2 at the end of the powerplay.
GT spinners kept things tight, not allowing a single boundary between overs 5-10. Rahane brought up his fifty off 36 balls but was stumped soon after. Andre Russell hit a few, but he, Ramandeep Singh, and Moeen Ali fell cheaply. Prasidh Krishna took two wickets as the Gujarat Titans sealed a dominant win.
