In a dominant exhibition of power batting in LQ vs QG PSL 2025, Lahore Qalandars thoroughly dominated Quetta Gladiators in the 2025 PSL season with a comprehensive 79-run win.
A breathtaking 67 by Fakhar Zaman and a scorching, unbeaten 19-ball half-century by Sam Billings propelled the Qalandars to a daunting total of 219 runs, which the Gladiators were unable to overhaul, eventually settling at a paltry 140/9.
Fakhar Zaman and Sam Billings Lead the Charge
The LQ vs QG PSL 2025 encounter witnessed Lahore Qalandars make the most of a poor bowling effort by Quetta Gladiators. Following their decision to bat first, the Qalandars were well-placed after a scintillating 39-ball 67 by Fakhar Zaman. But the actual fireworks erupted at the demise, as Sam Billings went on to make an unbeaten 50 from just 19 balls, which included two sixes off the last two deliveries of the innings.
His blistering scoring helped the Qalandars reach a huge total of 219/5
While things got off on the wrong foot, the Qalandars set off at breakneck speed, thanks to Abdullah Shafique, who drove Mohammad Amir three boundaries in three balls, dictating the pattern of a top-heavy innings.
While there was a temporary setback in momentum with Zaman playing his part more stoically at the beginning, soon he let the power loose, especially against spinners Akeal Hosein and veteran pacer Shoaib Malik. His retaliation against Faheem Ashraf and Akeal Hosein guaranteed the Qalandars to keep adding runs at a rapid rate.
Quetta Gladiators Struggles in the Chase
As a result, Shaheen Shah Afridi took the first break of the match by taking Saudi Shakeel’s wicket in the first over. He followed that up with the dismissal of Finn Allen, and Hasan Nawaz accounted for the wicket in the middle overs. Haris Rauf then took Kusal Mendis’s wicket which all but put an end to the Quetta Gladiators’ attempt to chase down a score of 144 runs.
At this stage, they had only managed to make 41 runs for the loss of 4 wickets thanks to the end of the powerplay. Rilee Rossouw and Kusal Mendis rebuilt some hope for Quetta with a fighting partnership of 45 runs, although that hardly provided comfort.
Rossouw was especially aggressive as he tried to stay in front of the required run rate, smashing 44 runs from just 18 deliveries until he was bowled by Rishad Hossain in a slight collapse.
This began a swift demise of lower-order players with wickets fairly easily taken by Rishad Hossain and Sikandar Raza. Faheem Ashraf tried to strike a couple of late boundaries but it was way beyond the Quetta Gladiators months earlier. They eventually fell 140/9, well short of what they were trying to get to.
Major Moments of the Match
Shaheen Shah Afridi’s Early Breakthroughs: Shaheen came roaring out of the blocks, dismissing both Saud Shakeel and Finn Allen in the first three overs, leaving Quetta Gladiators cut adrift.
Fakhar Zaman’s Revival
After a painstaking start, Fakhar Zaman’s caveman batting through the middle overs shone brightly, scoring 67 runs from 39 balls, and the total was huge and secured the win.
Sam Billings’ Late Rampage: Billings’ fiery 50 off 19 deliveries saw Lahore Qalandars set an unbeatable total, as his last two sixes arrived off successive deliveries in the last over.
Quetta’s Struggles Against the Qalandars’ Bowlers: After the early wickets, Quetta’s batting line-up failed to recover, with Rilee Rossouw and Kusal Mendis showing some resistance but ultimately falling short.
Qalandars Bounce Back After Opening Loss
The victory was a much-needed relief for Lahore Qalandars who lost heavily to Islamabad United in their opener. The performance exhibited the team’s power to come back strongly, both with the bat and their bowlers.
A Dominant Performance by Lahore Qalandars
The confrontation of LQ vs QG PSL 2025 was an all-round encounter with the Lahore Qalandars demonstrating controlled runs in the batting and bowling departments.
There was a scintillating 65 runs from Fakhar Zaman and the last-minute fireworks from Sam Billings were the main talking points from the innings with Shaheen Afridi and the bowling attack not allowing Quetta Gladiators a sniff during their innings. Quetta Gladiators were disappointing in their performance especially dealing with the bat.
They lost early and were left on the back foot and despite showing some resilience it was not enough to turn the game around. This defeat shows Queta’s woes in trying to recover from their problems within the tournament.
