Mahmudullah’s retirement from international cricket: The end of a journey

Mahmudullah, Bangladesh’s iconic all-rounder, made his international debut in 2007. On Wednesday, March 12, he announced his retirement from his 18-year long and successful career. He played a total of 430 matches in all three formats and represented Bangladesh. During this time he gave many memorable moments to cricket lovers.

Last tournament and decision

After Bangladesh’s disappointing performance in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, in which the team could not register a single win, Mahmudullah decided to retire. This was the same tournament that proved to be the last of his career. He also retired from ODIs recently, like his teammate Mushfiqur Rahim.

First Bangladeshi to score a century

Mahmudullah scored three centuries in the ODI World Cup, which makes him Bangladesh’s first centurion in this format. He scored two centuries in 2015 and one in 2023. He has always played an important role for the team as a finisher, especially in the lower order. His ODI career average was 36.46, in which he scored 5,689 runs.

Mahmudullah announced his retirement through Facebook (social media). He expressed his gratitude for the support and opportunities he received during his career. He said, “I have decided to retire from international cricket. I want to thank my teammates, coaches and fans. I thank my parents, my in-laws and especially my brother Imdad Ullah, who always stood by me.”

He further said, “The end of everything is not always right, but we have to move forward.” He also thanked his family and children, who stood by him in every difficult phase of his life.

Amid Mahmudullah’s retirement, Mushfiqur Rahim’s retirement from the game and uncertainty over Shakib Al Hasan‘s future, the responsibility of Bangladesh cricket management has now increased. It is the time for new players to come forward and secure the future of the team.
