Rohit Sharma played a fabulous inning in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against New Zealand. His innings were the pillar of the Indian batting line-up. It was his first half-century in any ICC Tournament finals.

With this inning, he joins an elite list of Clive Lloyd and some other greats; he becomes the second Indian captain to win the player of the match award in ICC tournament finals.

So far in cricket history, only 4 captains have been able to become the Player of the Match in the final of an ICC ODI tournament. Indian captain Rohit Sharma has joined this elite list after leading his team to the title win by performing brilliantly against New Zealand in the final of the Champions Trophy 2025.

Rohit Sharma- Champions Trophy 2025

Now Rohit Sharma’s name has also been added to this list. He played a brilliant inning of 76 runs off 83 balls with the help of 7 fours and 3 sixes against New Zealand in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which helped India win by 4 wickets. Rohit was awarded the Player of the Match award for his performance and became only the fourth captain to receive this honor in the final of an ICC ODI tournament.

MS Dhoni- World Cup 2011

MS Dhoni, one of India’s most successful captains, played an unbeaten inning of 91* runs off 79 balls with the help of 8 fours and 2 sixes against Sri Lanka in the final match of the ODI World Cup 2011. He helped India cross the threshold of victory by hitting a six, due to which India became the world champion after 28 years. Dhoni was also adjudged the Player of the Match for his captaincy innings.

Ricky Ponting- 2003 World Cup 

Australian captain Ricky Ponting led his team to the title win by playing an unbeaten inning of 140* runs off 121 balls with the help of 4 fours and 8 sixes against India in the 2003 World Cup final. His explosive batting made the match completely one-sided and helped the Australian team win the title. He was given the Player of the Match award for this brilliant performance.

Clive Lloyd- 1975 World Cup 

Australia and the West Indies faced off in the championship match of the inaugural ODI World Cup (1975) at Lord’s. In that match, West Indies captain Clive Lloyd played an explosive inning of 102 runs off 85 balls with the help of 12 fours and 2 sixes and played an important role in helping his team win by 17 runs.

Lloyd was awarded the Player of the Match award for his brilliant century, becoming the first captain to be awarded Player of the Match in the final of an ICC ODI tournament.
