Punjab Kings defeated Kolkata Knight Riders in a run-fest at the iconic Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata. The Punjab Kings were facing the daunting task of chasing 262 runs in the second innings. When the Sam Curran-led side chased down the total with eight balls to spare they smashed many records on their way. Here is a look at the records which were broken last night.
Highest successful chase
After Kolkata Knight Riders scored 261 runs in the first innings it appeared almost impossible for PBKS to have any chance of winning the match. Phil Salt and Sunil Narine shared a 138-run opening partnership. Narine scored 71 runs in 32 balls hitting nine fours and four sixes. Salt, on the other hand, scored six fours and sixes each.
PBKS kicked off their innings in great fashion and scored 93 runs in the powerplay. Prabhsimran Singh scored 54 runs in 20 balls hitting seven fours and five sixes. It was Jonny Bairstow whose knock truly gave substance to this innings. Bairstow scored an unbeaten century scoring 108 runs in 48 balls hitting eight fours and nine sixes. Rilee Rossuow and Shashank Singh supported Bairstow. Rossuow scored 26 runs in 16 balls hitting a four and two sixes. Shashank on the other hand remained unbeaten scoring 68 runs in 28 balls. He smashed two fours and eight sixes.
Most sixes in a T20 match
There were 42 sixes in the match, 18 of those came in the first innings. Salt smashed six sixes. Of the 24 sixes in the second innings nine were struck by Bairstow while Shashank smashed eight.
Most sixes in a innings in IPL
PBKS smashed 24 sixes in the second innings and smashed the record for hitting the most sixes in an innings in the IPL. The record was earlier held by Sunrisers Hyderabad who hit 22 sixes against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Delhi Capitals.
Second most runs in a T20 match
Even though the match ended in an emphatic fashion, the KKR-PBKS clash did not have as many runs as the RCB-SRH match. 523 runs were scored in the match and recorded the joint second-most runs in a T20 match only behind the 549 runs scored in the RCB-SRH clash.
Half-centuries galore for the openers
It was only the eleventh time in T20s that all the four openers scored half-centuries. Even though it has occurred 11 times in T20s it was only the first time in an IPL where all four openers scored half-centuries. Phil Salt (75), Sunil Narine (71), Prabhsimran Singh (54) and Jonny Bairstow (108*) scored 308 runs which are the most runs scored in an IPL match.
High striking half-centuries
For the first time in the history of T20 cricket, five fifties were smashed at a strike rate higher than 200. Prabhsimran scored the fastest half-century of the match in 18 balls, while Shashank, Bairstow and Narine scored their fifties in 23 balls and Salt scored his fifty in 25 balls.
Most 200-plus chases
With their chase of 261, PBKS have now chased down seven totals of more than 200 runs. They have the most chases of 200-plus scores in T20 cricket ahead of Mumbai Indians, Quetta Gladiators, India and Australia who have chased down five 200-plus totals.
Conclusion
During the Eden Gardens, Punjab Kings broke hearts and records with an incredible show of power-hitting. They faced an enormous pursuit of 262 runs, yet they persevered despite the odds. Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh’s blitz combined with Jonny Bairstow’s blazing century to lead PBKS to victory. With their unrelenting attack, they broke records for most sixes in an IPL innings, greatest successful chase, and more. This legendary match cedes its place in cricket history and establishes PBKS as the ultimate chasers.
