ODI World Cup: Netherlands restrict New Zealand to 322 runs

New Zealand scored 322 runs against the Netherlands in the first innings with three players scoring 50s. Here is a recap of the first innings.

New Zealand scored 322 runs against the Netherlands at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad. New Zealand was asked to bat in the first innings after losing the toss. Here is a summary of the first innings.

New Zealand on top in the powerplay

The powerplay got off to the best possible start for the Dutch team thanks to the bowlers from the Netherlands. Only one or two wickets were missing from the first three overs. Three maiden overs were bowled by the Netherlands to begin their innings. Devon Conway received a maiden over from Aryan Dutt and Will Young received a maiden over from Ryan Klein at the other end. The next ball in the third over was a false shot from Conway as a result of another maiden over delivered by Aryan.

The New Zealand batters took control of the innings and dominated the powerplay in the following six overs, scoring 61 runs. Without losing a wicket, New Zealand scored 63 runs at the end of the powerplay. The Netherlands could have restrained the Kiwis for a lower total and would have felt that they let control of the powerplay slip from their hands.

Spinners keep it tight for the Netherlands

After three consecutive quiet overs in which only six runs were scored, the Netherlands eventually broke the first wicket partnership. Roelof van der Merwe, 38, struck in only his third over, getting Devon Conway out. Conway attempted to take on van der Merwe and stepped out of his crease to clear the boundary, but he was unable to get the ball past Bas de Leede, who was positioned at deep midwicket. Following Conway’s wicket, Colin Ackermann was added to the attack and spinners began to bowl in tandem. Aryan resumed his attack and delivered a one-run over. Teja Nidamanuru failed to hit the stumps in the 19th over, missing a chance for the Netherlands to run out Rachin Ravindra.

Young needed 59 balls to reach his sixth ODI half-century. Ravindra played a completely different knock than he did against England. On the 24th ball of his innings, he scored his first boundary. Young appeared to be on track for a century until he was dismissed in the 27th over by a short-length delivery from Paul van Meekeren. While attempting to pull, the Kiwi opener could only top-edge the ball to Bas de Leede at mid-on. Young smashed seven fours and two sixes while scoring 70 runs off of 80 balls. At number 4, Darryl Mitchell tried to boost the ante. Mitchell was scoring at a run-a-ball rate.

Rachin Ravindra reached fifty runs before being out after the very next ball. In just the second over of his second spell, Roelof returned and struck and dismissed Ravindra. There were three balls before Ravindra was out. Darryl Mitchell received a lifeline from Sybrand Engelbrecht, a debutant. Engelbrecht dropped a dolly as Mitchell attempted to clip a full-length delivery on the stumps and gave a straightforward catch to short mid-wicket.

Netherlands apply brakes on scoring

After the 40th over, New Zealand appeared to be on track for a sizable total. With set batsmen Darryl Mitchell and Tom Latham appearing to be in position, New Zealand had scored 238 runs for the loss of just three wickets going into the final 10 overs. Mitchell was out on the first ball of the 41st over when van Meekeren clean bowled him with a slow off-cutter. Mitchell struck two sixes and five fours while scoring 48 runs in 47 balls. Glenn Phillips was dismissed by Bas de Leede in the very next over. The all-rounder almost had two wickets in two balls as Mark Chapman was given out for a caught behind by on-field umpire, Paul Reiffel. An instant review from Chapman saved him with ultra-edge showing a flat line.

Chapman was out on the first ball of Aryan Dutt‘s second over of the spell when he returned for a third spell. After reaching his fifty-first run in the previous over, Tom Latham, the Kiwi captain, was removed by Aryan in the 49th over. Mitchell Santner gave the inning a fantastic ending by scoring 36 runs in only 17 balls.
