Promising cricketer Tilak Varma has broken his silence after being selected for India’s Asia Cup squad, expressing his excitement and revealing a supportive chat with Rohit Sharma, the captain of Mumbai Indians. The 20-year-old was named in the 17-member team, which also features the return of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Jasprit Bumrah.
Varma’s selection raised eyebrows, as he is an uncapped player in ODIs. Ajit Agarkar, chairman of national selectors, highlighted Varma’s potential displayed during his brief stint in T20Is. Varma has played 7 T20Is against West Indies and Ireland, showing promising skills.
Speaking about his unexpected selection, Varma shared, “I never dreamed that I would debut directly in the Asia Cup, especially in the one-day side. I always envisioned debuting for India in ODIs. It’s a significant moment for me. I dreamed of this – making my ODI debut for India, and within a short span, getting a call for the Asia Cup. I’m preparing for this dream opportunity.”
Confident in his abilities, Varma stated, “I’m quite confident about playing one-day cricket. I’ve played List A cricket for a while, both for my state and teams. I’m looking forward to performing well in ODIs.”
Varma, a left-handed batter, also plays for Mumbai Indians in the IPL under Rohit Sharma’s leadership. He praised Rohit’s support, recalling, “Rohit bhaiya always backed me. During the IPL, he approached me and talked about the game, encouraging me to enjoy and express myself.”
The young talent expressed his eagerness to perform, saying, “I’ve expressed myself in the IPL and everywhere else. I frequently converse with him. He advised me to enjoy my game. I’m thrilled to be part of the team and want to continue enjoying my cricket journey.”
As Varma gears up for his Asia Cup debut, his interactions with Rohit Sharma continue to serve as a source of motivation and guidance.
