Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals by seven wickets in a low-scoring championship game on Sunday, winning the first Women’s Premier League (WPL) thanks to a late surge from England all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt (60 not out).
Mumbai Indians beat the goal of 131 with three balls left to win the title in front of a partisan crowd that completely filled the Brabourne Stadium in this city.
The Delhi Capitals, who chose to bat first, made a good score of 131 for 9 despite a collapse that saw them reduced to 79 for 9 in 16 overs. Shikha Pandey (27 not out) and Radha Yadav’s unbroken 52-run partnership for the 10th wicket allowed for this to happen (27 not out).
Sciver-Brunt and skipper Harmanpreet (37) played vital contributions in helping MI reach 134 for 3 in 19.3 overs, which was a difficult target to follow down.
Sciver-Brunt, who was also named Player of the Final, scored her third fifty and placed second in the WPL’s run-scorers’ chart behind DC captain Meg Lanning (345 runs).
When MI was in a precarious position at 23 for 2 in the fourth over, Harmanpreet (37 from 39 balls, 5x4s) and Sciver-Brunt teamed up and combined their batting prowess to remain composed under pressure while scoring 72 runs for the third wicket.
Even though MI had eight wickets in hand at that point, they still required 45 runs from the final five overs.
At that point, Sciver-Brunt had 28 off 38 balls, but she hit a string of boundaries to assist her team over the finish line.
Mumbai Indians achieved this feat by defeating Delhi for the second time in three encounters this season, and their bowlers put up a brilliant performance in the first half.
