WPL 2023: Jhulan Goswami Set To Be Appointed As Bowling Coach For Mumbai

Jhulan Goswami, 40, retired from international cricket last year. The Capitals, according to Ganguly, were also interested in bringing in Goswami.

Jhulan Goswami, the legendary Indian bowler, will coach with the Mumbai-based club in the first Women’s Premier League (WPL). The former bowler has apparently been hired as a bowling coach and mentor for the debut season, which will take place in March.

According to ESPN Cricinfo, the Delhi-based team was also interested in roping her as their bowling coach. However, the leading wicket-taker in women’s cricket chose Mumbai in the end.

Sourav Ganguly, director of cricket for the Delhi franchise, revealed the news to the media at Eden Gardens, saying:

“Jhulan has gone to Mumbai. We had given her an offer, but she is going to Mumbai.”

The Mumbai-based team has yet to confirm Goswami’s accession to their backroom personnel. The pace bowler’s experience during a two-decade career adds significant value to the franchise’s preparation for its inaugural season.

Goswami retired from cricket in September 2022 and has coaching expertise having previously playing for Bengal and India as a player-coach and mentor-player.

Goswami’s teammate and former India captain Mithali Raj had previously been hired by the Adani Group-owned Gujarat Giants to coach the club during WPL 2023. The great batter showed an interest in playing but was denied any opportunity.

The inaugural World Premier League (WPL) auction has been scheduled for February 6 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). However, the fact that five of the six franchise owners are now active in the ongoing International League T20 (ILT20) complicates matters.

A few club owners have asked the BCCI to hold the auction after the ILT20 elimination round or finals. Because organisers are having problems locating a hotel to hold the auction, the sale could be held in either Mumbai or Delhi on February 11 or 13, respectively.

The WPL’s first season is scheduled to begin in March 2023.
